Preview: Charleroi Cougars vs. McGuffey Highlanders
Charleroi and McGuffey are an even 5-5 against one another since December of 2018, but not for long. The Charleroi Cougars will be playing in front of their home fans against the McGuffey Highlanders at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, both teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Charleroi scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Saturday. They came out on top against California by a score of 62-47 (the very same score they lost by the week prior).
It was another big night for Bella Carroto, who scored 27 points. That makes it three consecutive games in which she has scored at least a third of Charleroi's points. Another player making a difference was Ella Sypolt, who scored 13 points.
Meanwhile, McGuffey put the finishing touches on their seventh blowout victory of the season on Thursday. They put the hurt on Yough with a sharp 57-31 victory. Given McGuffey's advantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania basketball rankings (they are ranked 203rd, while Yough is ranked 436th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Alexis Ewig continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines, scoring 19 points along with five rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points she has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Sarah Brownlee, who scored five points.
Charleroi's win bumped their record up to 6-7. As for McGuffey, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 11-2.
Charleroi came up short against McGuffey in their previous meeting back in February of 2023, falling 53-46. Can Charleroi avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
