Basketball Recap: Taylor Mayer's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Monte Vista over Santana

Monte Vista was the 48-40 winner over Santana when they last played one another back in January of 2022, but their luck changed this time around. The Monte Vista Monarchs came up short against the Santana Sultans on Tuesday, falling 53-28. While losing is never fun, the Monarchs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1296th, while the Sultans are ranked 637th).

Monte Vista's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Taylor Mayer, who posted 13 points. That's the most points Mayer has posted since back in November of 2024. Knikole Steward was another key player, putting up eight points.

Santana's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Harper Diaz, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 14 rebounds. Diaz has been hot, having also posted three or more steals the last five times she's played. Another player making a difference was Sam Mora, who put up ten points along with eight boards and seven steals.

Monte Vista has been struggling recently as they've lost 14 of their last 15 contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-19 record this season. As for Santana, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games, which provided a nice bump to their 18-5 record this season.

Monte Vista wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 67-21 victory against Mount Miguel on the 31st. As for Santana, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 38-28 win against Valhalla on the 31st.
