Preview: El Capitan Vaqueros vs. Granite Hills Eagles
El Capitan has enjoyed a five-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will challenge the Granite Hills Eagles at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully El Capitan focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 15 on Tuesday.
Last Tuesday, El Capitan strolled past Monte Vista with points to spare, taking the game 54-35. Given El Capitan's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 356th, while Monte Vista is ranked 745th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
El Capitan found their leader in underclassman Keira Heinricy, who scored 24 points along with five assists and five rebounds. Heinricy hasn't dropped below 15points for three straight games. Another player making a difference was Paige Worthem, who scored eight points along with eight rebounds and two blocks.
Even though Granite Hills has not done well against Grossmont recently (they were 0-6 in their previous six matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. Granite Hills came out on top against Grossmont by a score of 33-26.
El Capitan pushed their record up to 14-9 with that win, which was their third straight at home. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 68.0 points per game. As for Granite Hills, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a massive bump to their 6-8 record this season.
El Capitan skirted past Granite Hills 46-43 in their previous meeting two weeks ago. The rematch might be a little tougher for El Capitan since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
