Baseball Recap: North Central Takes a Loss

North Central extended their losing streak to seven on Tuesday, dropping them down to 6-13. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 9-7 heartbreaker at the hands of the North Knox Warriors. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Thunderbirds have suffered since May 6th.

Lane Phegley was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one double. He is becoming a predictor of North Central's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 3-1 (and 3-12 when he doesn't).

As for North Knox, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-9 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.5 runs on average over those games.

On North Knox's side, the team relied heavily on Reed Vanmeter, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two runs, one double, and one RBI. That's the most runs Vanmeter has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Camden McCory, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run.

North Central and North Knox are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. The Thunderbirds will square off against Dugger Union at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Bulldogs have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 14.23 runs per game on average), something North Central will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for North Knox, they will face off against Linton-Stockton at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
