Soccer Game Preview: Hilmar vs. Sonora

The Hilmar Yellowjackets will venture away from home to face off against the Sonora Wildcats at 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Hilmar is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 3.3 goals per game this season.

If Sonora heads into halftime all tied up, they better play a good second half: that's when Hilmar took over last week. Hilmar never let Escalon onto the board and left with a 3-0 victory on Friday. Given the Yellowjackets' advantage in MaxPreps' California soccer rankings (they are ranked 361st, while the Cougars are ranked 836th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Raylynn Mendoza and Mili Lorios scored all three of Hilmar's goals, bringing their combined season tally to 24 goals.

Meanwhile, Sonora had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 3.5 goals) and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Warriors, sneaking past 2-1.

Sonora is also on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests, which provided a nice bump to their 8-2-1 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they scored 17 goals over those five games. As for Hilmar, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 12-4-3.
