MaxPreps 2018-19 California Girls Basketball All-State Teams

By Kevin Askeland Apr 23, 2019, 3:00pm

Archbishop Mitty's Haley Jones is state Player of the Year and Oakland's Orlando Gray is Coach of the Year.

While Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) may have fallen short of winning a state championship in 2019, that did not diminish the type of season put in by senior Haley Jones.

Ranked as the No. 1 prospect in the class of 2019 by ESPN, Jones averaged 26.1 points, 12.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 3.7 steals on a team that won the Central Coast Section Open Division championship. The Monarchs finished 25-3 overall and ranked No. 4 in the nation by MaxPreps.

The Stanford-bound Jones, who was named the top player in the Bay Area by both the Bay Area News Group and the San Francisco Chronicle, has earned the MaxPreps California State Player of the Year honor.

Jones finished her career with 2,127 points and a record of 105-11.

The Monarch standout heads the MaxPreps California All-State Girls Basketball Teams, which include a total of six overall teams of five players each (regardless of position) and six 10-member divisional squads split into a first and second team. Teams are placed in the divisions they competed at the sectional level.

Coach of one of the greatest Oakland Section-based girls basketball team in over 30 years, Orlando Gray is the MaxPreps Coach of the Year. He guided the Wildcats to an Oakland Section championship over Oakland Tech (which went on to win a Division IV state championship) and then claimed the CIF Division III state championship with a 51-35 victory over McFarland. Oakland won its five state playoff games by an average of 17 points a game.

Oakland is the fifth team from the Oakland Section to win a state title dating back to 1988 when Fremont went 28-0 (although 11 games were later forfeited). Oakland Tech won back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005 and also a Division 5 title in 2019.

MVPs were also chosen for each division with Jones the MVP of Division 1.

Division 2 MVP
Jazlen Green, Lakeside (Lake Elsinore)
The Player of the Year in Riverside County, Green averaged 28.7 points per game and was also named the Southern Section 2A Player of the Year.

Division 3 MVP
Angel Jackson, Salesian College Preparatory (Richmond)
A McDonald's All-American, Jackson helped Salesian knock off Haley Jones-led Archbishop Mitty in the CIF Open Division playoffs. She averaged 16.2 points for a team that won the North Coast Section Division III championship.

Division 4 MVP
Stephanie Okowi, Oakland Tech (Oakland)
Oakland Tech won the third state title in school history. She averaged 12.5 points per game and was all-area by the San Francisco Chronicle and the Bay Area News Group.

Division 5 MVP
Ila Lane, Woodside Priory (Portola Valley)
Lane was a force in the middle for Woodside Priory, averaging 18.3 points and 11.9 rebounds per game. She led her team to a Central Coast Section Division 5 championship and the third round of the CIF Division 4 playoffs. The 6-foot-4 center will play at UC Santa Barbara.

Division 6 MVP
Bernada Rreshpja, Valley Christian (Roseville)
A former member of the Albanian 16-Under team, Rreshpja made a big impression in her first season in the United States leading Valley Christian to a Sac-Joaquin Section championship. The Duquesne-bound senior averaged 27 points per game.
