Football Recap: Sharyland Starts Season with Win Against Weslaco East

Sharyland gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Friday. They enjoyed a cozy 45-28 win over the Weslaco East Wildcats. This was payback for the Rattlers, who suffered a 33-27 loss the last time these two teams met.

Calvin Harris was a one-man wrecking crew as he threw for 241 yards and three touchdowns while completing 75% of his passes, and also rushed for 60 yards and a pair of scores on only seven carries. What's more, he racked up 146 passer rating, the most he's had since back in September of 2024. Sebastian Martinez also helped with two TDs in total.

Sharyland didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Weslaco East to a completion percentage of just 46.7%. The Rattlers weren't nearly as limited: they posted one of 70.6%.

Weslaco East lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Elias Rodriguez, who rushed for 163 yards and one touchdown. Aiden Gonzalez was another key player, rushing for 102 yards and one score on only seven carries.

Coming up, Sharyland will face off against Hanna at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Weslaco East, they will take on Mission at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
