Basketball Recap: Kaylie Mares Key Part of a Team Effort in Pioneers Win

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Redwood, Mt. Whitney was happy to have turned things around on Thursday. They walked away with a 44-33 victory over the Golden West Trailblazers. The win was some much needed relief for the Pioneers as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.

Mt. Whitney got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Kaylie Mares out in front who went 7 of 16 on her way to 16 points and five boards. Those 16 points gave Mares a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Dolores Carter, who posted seven points and 14 rebounds.

When it comes to explaining why Golden West lost, don't look at Aniyah Venegas. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 21 points and ten boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Mia Thomas, who had two points and 12 rebounds.

Mt. Whitney's win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 10-7. As for Golden West, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost 11 of their last 12 games, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-16 record this season.

Mt. Whitney has already played their next matchup (against El Diamante), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Golden West will venture away from home to take on Porterville at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Golden West is facing Porterville at the right time seeing as Porterville is stuck on a four-game losing streak.
