Softball Recap: Waverly Vikings vs. Omaha Westside Warriors
Waverly had lost seven straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Saturday they dropped down to 2-1 to make it eight. They fell just short of the Omaha Westside Warriors by a score of 8-6. The Vikings were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Warriors apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in August of 2022.
Jill Hind made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one triple. The team also got some help courtesy of Eva Tucker, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
As for Omaha Westside, the win keeps them at an undefeated 4-0. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 10.3 runs this season.
On Omaha Westside's side, Hannah Miller made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out ten batters over 5.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off eight hits (and only one walk). Miller has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run and two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Taryn Lewis, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Emma Kauffman also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Waverly will head out to face off against Nebraska City at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Omaha Westside, they will venture away from home to take on Columbus at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
