Chico scored the most points they've had this season on Thursday, but it wasn't enough. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 73-72 to the Foothill Cougars. The Panthers' defeat continues a trend for the team, making it three in a row.

When it comes to explaining why Chico lost, don't look at Josie Carlos. Despite the final result, she went 12 for 27 on her way to 36 points and four steals. Those 36 points gave Carlos a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Leah Cawthon, who went 5 of 8 en route to 14 points and seven rebounds.

Kalli Smith was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 30 points and 20 boards for Foothill. That makes it five consecutive games in which Smith has scored at least a third of Foothill's points. Another player making a difference was Riley Sedlak, who posted 15 points and five rebounds.

Chico's loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 13-9. As for Foothill, their victory ended a five-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 12-10.

Chico wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 57-42 defeat against Christian Brothers on the 1st. As for Foothill, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Shasta at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
