Basketball Recap: Triton Takes a Loss

Triton was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their sixth straight loss. They were dealt a 59-31 defeat at the hands of the Overhills Jaguars. While losing is never fun, the Hawks can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 368th, while the Jaguars are ranked 148th).

Despite the loss, Triton still got an impressive performance from Nashara McNeil-Watlington, who posted 16 points. That was a full 51.6% of Triton's points, marking the fourth time in a row she's put up more than a third of the team's points. Ja'Niah Smith was another key player, putting up six points and five boards.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Overhills to victory, but perhaps none more so than Najiha Allen, who almost dropped a double-double on 20 points and nine rebounds. Allen is also on a roll when it comes to blocks, as she's now posted two or more in the last four games she's played. Another player making a difference was Unique Cooke, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 13 boards.

Triton's loss dropped their record down to 7-16. As for Overhills, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 14-8.

Coming up, Triton will be playing at home against Harnett Central at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Triton is facing Harnett Central at the right time seeing as Harnett Central is stuck on a six-game losing streak. As for Overhills, they will challenge Pine Forest at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
