Brentwood is preparing for their first region matchup of the season on Tuesday. They will look to defend their home field against the Gatewood Gators at 5:30 p.m. Brentwood is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.7 runs per game this season.
Brentwood is headed into Tuesday's game looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their third straight game on Thursday. They lost 16-2 to Edmund Burke Academy.
Brentwood saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Riley Helton, who went 1-for-3 with one RBI. Cooper Smith also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Meanwhile, Gatewood gave up the first runs on Friday, but they didn't let that get them down. They skirted past Central Fellowship Christian Academy 11-10.
Jackson Love looked comfortable as he struck out six batters over 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits (and not a single walk). Those six strikeouts gave him a new career-high.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Connor Mitchem, who went 2-for-5 with one home run, one stolen base, and two RBI. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Wilson Moore, who scored two runs and stole four bases while getting on base in two of his three plate appearances.
Gatewood always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .571. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Central Fellowship Christian Academy only posted an OBP of .429.
Gatewood is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.8 runs over those games. Brentwood's defeat dropped their record down to 6-5.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Brentwood has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Gatewood struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 7.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Brentwood might still be hurting after the 13-0 loss they got from Gatewood in their previous matchup back in March of 2024. Can Brentwood avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
