The Overfelt Wrestling Classic is considered by many as the preview to this year's Central Coast Section championships and this past weekend's finishes certainly lived up to the billing.

Palo Alto's John Hall had been waiting for nearly a year to erase the sour taste left from last year's section finals. Hall lost in double overtime in the 189 pound division to Gilroy's Andres Barragan early in the tournament and on Saturday Hall got his revenge, pinning Barragan in just over five minutes to win at 189 pounds in the 42nd annual Overfelt Classic Tournament in San Jose.

Oak Grove senior Davonte Carr pinned Dave Belardes of Reno's Damonte Ranch in 3:05 in the title match of the 215s while Gilroy's Hunter Collins pinned St. Francis' Drew Meulman in 1:27 to win the 171s for the third-consecutive year.

Collin's freshman teammate Jesse Delgado, ranked No. 1 in the state, dominated Overfelt's Al Quenga with four takedowns before recording a fall for the win and the tournament title. Gilroy's Ethan Ogle beat Cupertino's Paul Kim to win at 160 pounds.

Cupertino's Aris Harutyunyan, ranked second in the CCS, beat No. 1 Matt Martinez of Watsonville 9-6 in the 145s.

Scotts Valley's Dane Stevens won the 130 lb. division while Fremont's Boris Novachkov, the defending section and state champion at the 103 lb. division, claimed the Overfelt crown in the 127 lb. class while teammate Mark Scandalis captured the 135-pound title.

College Park posted a 223.5 to edge out Reno's Damonte Ranch by three points to claim the team championship.

Boys Basketball

Serra High held Mitty High's star attraction, junior center Drew Gordon, who is already getting heavy attention from college recruiters nationwide, scoreless for the entire first half and deep into the third quarter on Friday night.

The bad news was that Serra still trailed on the scoreboard by 20 points with 12 minutes left in the game.

Despite holding Gordon to just three points for the entire game, the Padres saw their four-game winning streak snapped in a 51-34 loss to the Monarchs on Friday in San Mateo.

Serra, coming off a huge upset win over Riordan just a week before, fell to 10-7 overall and 4-3 in West Catholic Athletic League action, while Mitty, which had just lost to Riordan, improved to 13-4 overall and 6-1 in league play.

Forward Collin Chiverton led the way for the Monarchs with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while no player from Serra reached double-digits in scoring.

Girls Basketball

The highly-touted Mills High girls basketball team was brought back to Earth on Friday when Capuchino snapped a seven-year losing streak to Mills with a 66-64 victory in San Bruno. Capuchino last defeated Mills 52-50 in February of 1999.

Mills (16-3, 3-1 Peninsula Athletic League Central) got 22 points from Keshia Suhail while Amanda Lee added 17 in the losing effort.

Capuchino (8-10, 3-1) had four players score in double figures. Adele Faa'taui led the way with 19 points and 13 rebounds, followed by Bianca Mercurio with 17, Justina Wong with 14 and Valerie Bragagnolo with 12.

In the PAL North, Val Broder scored three of her game-high 15 points in the final minute of play as Terra Nova (12-7, 4-0) downed Oceana (12-7, 2-2) 36-34. Sequoyah Reed scored 21 points and grabbed 22 rebounds to lead Westmoor (16-3, 4-0) over Jefferson (3-10, 0-4) 72-32.
