Preview: Camarillo Scorpions vs. Ventura Cougars
The Camarillo Scorpions will head out on the road to challenge the Ventura Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. One thing working in Camarillo's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last five games.
Camarillo pushed their score all the way to 57 on Thursday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell to Oak Park 61-57. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Camarillo in their matchups with Oak Park: they've now lost four in a row.
Despite their defeat, Camarillo saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Emerson Martin, who scored 15 points along with five rebounds and five steals, was perhaps the best of all. Martin has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last five times she's played. Christa Contreras was another key contributor, scoring 14 points along with six assists and five rebounds.
Meanwhile, Ventura was able to grind out a solid victory over Oxnard on Thursday, taking the game 54-43. Ventura pushed the score to 47-22 by the end of the third, a deficit Oxnard cut but never quite recovered from.
Ventura got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Skyler Knight out in front who scored 18 points along with five rebounds and five steals. Knight has been hot recently, having posted 17 or more points the last three times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Kailee Staniland, who scored 16 points along with six assists.
Camarillo's defeat ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 20-7. As for Ventura, their win was their 18th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 24-4.
Everything came up roses for Camarillo against Ventura in their previous matchup back in May of 2021 as the squad secured a 60-30 victory. With Camarillo ahead 33-12 at the half, the match was all but over already.
