By Kevin Askeland May 16, 2019, 11:00am

Identifying the nation's top all-around athletic programs in a variety of different categories.

Rhode Island is a small state but it has two of the best high school athletic programs in the nation.

Bishop Hendricken (Warwick) has the nation's top boys sports program while La Salle Academy (Providence) has the top girls program, according to the MaxPreps Cup standings following the winter sports season.

Bishop Hendricken, an all-boys school, has won seven state titles and was ranked No. 4 in the nation in boys cross country during the fall. La Salle Academy, a co-ed school, has won six state championships in girls sports and has finished second in two others.

Christian Brothers (St. Louis, Mo.) is just 35 points behind Bishop Hendricken (1050-1015) in the boys division while Carmel (Ind.), the overall national leader with 1,831 points, ranks second in the girls with 832 points.

The boys and girls categories are two of 11 offshoots of the MaxPreps Cup standings following the winter sports season – initially released on April 30. Other lists include: Top 25 medium-sized school rankings, Top 10 small school rankings, regional rankings (midwest, south, southwest, northeast, west coast) and Top 10 public and private schools.

American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.), last year's overall champion, is the top medium-sized school (1,000 to 2,000 students) with 1,205 points. It is one point ahead of Edina (Minn.) with 1,204.

Westminster (Atlanta), the 2013 overall MaxPreps Cup champ, is the No. 1 small school with 791 points.

For the regional rankings, Carmel is No. 1 in the midwest, La Salle Academy is the top team in the northeast, Green Hope (Cary, N.C.) leads the south, Highland Park (Dallas) is No. 1 in the southwest and Jesuit (Portland, Ore.) leads the west coast.

Carmel is the No. 1 public school while Jesuit is the top private school.

The MaxPreps Cup is a ranking system devised to rate every high school sport state championship in the nation in order to determine the nation's best overall high school sports programs. Varying point totals are awarded to teams that win a state title, or finish in second place, based on the type of sport, the size of the state, the type of enrollment division and the number of teams participating in the enrollment division. Points are also awarded for teams that appear in national rankings for selected sports.
Jesuit (Portland) captured Oregon's state title for boys basketball, helping secure the No. 1 spot among all private schools nationally in the MaxPreps Cup standings.
