Basketball Recap: Southwest SD Find Success

Southwest SD hadn't done well against Chula Vista recently (they were 0-9 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Southwest SD Raiders had just enough and edged the Chula Vista Spartans out 38-35. For the Raiders, this counts as revenge for the 25-16 win the Spartans walked away with the last time they faced one another back in January of 2023.

Southwest SD can attribute much of their success to Jazlyn Martinez, who posted 16 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Emely Cervantes, who put up six points.

Chula Vista lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Tracy Echoku, who went 6 of 14 on her way to 19 points and seven rebounds. Another player making a difference was Nancy Chavez, who had six points in addition to 12 rebounds and four steals.

Southwest SD is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches, which provided a nice bump to their 5-3 record this season. The wins came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 22.4 points per game. As for Chula Vista, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-6.

Coincidentally, Southwest SD and Chula Vista will both be playing Holtville the next time they take the court. Southwest SD will head out to face Holtville at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, while Chula Vista will head out to face them at 10:30 a.m. on Monday.
