Recap: West Branch Warriors vs. Williamsburg Blue Pirates

If the West Branch Warriors were riding high off their 41-18 takedown of the Moshannon Valley Black Knights/Damsels on Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. West Branch suffered a tough 48-25 loss at the hands of Williamsburg on Friday. While losing is never fun, West Branch can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania basketball rankings (they are ranked 303rd, while Williamsburg is ranked 92nd).

Despite the loss, West Branch still got an impressive performance from Jenna Mertz, who scored ten points. The contest was Mertz's third in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Sarah Guglielmi, who scored four points.

Williamsburg found their leader in underclassman Levada Gorsuch, who scored 20 points along with nine rebounds. Those 20 points set a new season-high mark for her. Leeanna Royer was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with four steals.

West Branch's defeat dropped their record down to 2-1. As for Williamsburg, they pushed their record up to 4-0 with that win, which was their 16th straight at home dating back to last season.

West Branch will be home for the holidays to greet Tussey Mountain at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Tussey Mountain will be looking to extend their current five-game winning streak. As for Williamsburg, they will head out on the road to face off against Bishop Guilfoyle at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Bishop Guilfoyle knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past three matches -- so hopefully Williamsburg likes a good challenge.
