Baseball Recap: Mt. Vernon Victorious

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Marion, Mt. Vernon was happy to have turned things around on Friday. They skirted past the Belleville East Lancers 7-5. This was payback for the Rams, who suffered a 13-0 loss the last time these two teams met.

Mt. Vernon let Nolan Mast and Ty Pierce run wild. Mast went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base, while Pierce went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, and one double. Pierce is becoming a predictor of Mt. Vernon's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 4-1 (and 3-5 when he doesn't).

Mt. Vernon now has a winning record of 7-6. As for Belleville East, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 7-5-1.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mt. Vernon will welcome Carbondale at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Belleville East, they will host Illini West at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. The Lancers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Chargers have averaged an impressive 11 runs per game this season.
