Basketball Recap: Oceanside Takes a Loss

Oceanside lost against Rancho Buena Vista back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Wednesday. The Oceanside Pirates lost to the Rancho Buena Vista Longhorns on the road by a 60-45 margin. While losing is never fun, the Pirates can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 419th, while the Longhorns are ranked 157th).

When it comes to explaining why Oceanside lost, don't look at Martina Griffin. Despite the final result, she went 5 for 11 on her way to 12 points. Griffin is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last ten games she's played. Martha Wong also deserves some recognition as she posted her first block of the season.

Even though they lost, Oceanside smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 19 consecutive games.

Camille Dake continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Rancho Buena Vista, going 12 of 19 en route to 30 points in addition to eight rebounds and three blocks. The team also got some help courtesy of Tiaira Richardson, who posted nine points and five boards.

Oceanside now has a losing record at 11-12. As for Rancho Buena Vista, they are on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 18-7 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Oceanside will welcome Torrey Pines at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Torrey Pines is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 55.3 points per game this season. As for Rancho Buena Vista, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Carlsbad at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Rancho Buena Vista also hasn't been messing around on offense: they've averaged 54.8 points per game.
