Basketball Recap: Mission Viejo Takes a Loss

It was a good run, but Mission Viejo unfortunately witnessed the end of their three-game winning streak on Saturday. They were outmatched by the El Toro Chargers and fell 63-28. While losing is never fun, the Diablos can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 920th, while the Chargers are ranked 332nd).

When it comes to explaining why Mission Viejo lost, don't look at Savanna Whitesides. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 12 points and 19 rebounds. Whitesides has been hot, having posted eight or more boards the last six times she's played. Another player making a difference was Sofia Gozzo, who posted six points in addition to five rebounds and three steals.

Even though they lost, Mission Viejo smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 27 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive boards in four consecutive matches.

Mission Viejo's loss dropped their record down to 9-17. As for El Toro, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven contests, which provided a nice bump to their 12-10 record this season.

Mission Viejo will venture away from home to square off against Beckman at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Beckman has been dominant on offense recently, having racked up an incredible 195 points over their last three games. El Toro has already played their next match (against Tesoro), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
