Basketball Recap: Sofia Salgado's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Oxnard over Buena Park

After flying high against Newbury Park last Thursday, Oxnard came back down to earth. The Oxnard Yellowjackets lost 62-40 to the Buena Park Coyotes on Thursday. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Yellowjackets came into the contest with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 127th, while the Coyotes are ranked 294th).

Oxnard's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Sofia Salgado, who posted 14 points and five rebounds. Destinee Hererra was another key player, putting up four points and ten rebounds.

Even though they lost, Oxnard smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Buena Park only pulled down nine offensive boards.

Gloria Barrera was her usual excellent self, going 14 of 21 on her way to 32 points and seven rebounds for Buena Park. That makes it nine consecutive games in which Barrera has scored at least a third of Buena Park's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Mya Barnes, who went 6 of 14 on her way to 13 points along with six rebounds and three steals.

Oxnard's loss dropped their record down to 9-5. As for Buena Park, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-4.

Oxnard didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 37-36 win against Thousand Oaks on the 27th. As for Buena Park, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 63-57 victory against Camarillo on the 27th.
