Football Game Preview: Coronado Mustangs vs. Caprock Longhorns

The Coronado Mustangs will head out on the road to square off against the Caprock Longhorns at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Coronado comes in still looking for their first win of the season.

Coronado is headed into the contest out to prove that what happened against Abilene on Thursday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. The Mustangs had to suffer through a 35-6 loss at the hands of the Eagles. While losing is never fun, the Mustangs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 663rd, while the Eagles are ranked 108th).

Even if they lost, Coronado's defensive line still kept up the pressure with three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: JJ Johnson, Trae-Anthony Thompson, and Zeke Ramirez, who each picked up one sack apiece. Coronado got some further help from Johnson: he picked up a sack and made 12 total tackles (2.0 for loss).

Meanwhile, Caprock took a blow against Amarillo on Thursday, falling 45-10. The loss continues a trend for the Longhorns in their meetings with the Sandies: they've now lost seven in a row.

Caprock's defeat dropped their record down to 1-5. As for Coronado, their loss dropped their record down to 0-7.

Coronado skirted past Caprock 34-31 in their previous matchup back in October of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
