Baseball Recap: Make It Eight in a Row for D.H. Conley

D.H. Conley barely beat Hoggard the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. D.H. Conley blew past Hoggard 10-2 on Monday. D.H. Conley might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matchups by seven runs or more this season.

D.H. Conley gave Gavin Whitley the start and clearly made the right call: he struck out eight batters over 3.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and not a single walk). Whitley has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one hit any time he's pitched this season. Caleb Case relieved him and did a solid job, striking out six batters over 3.1 innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Hayden Willoughby, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and one stolen base. Those five RBI gave him a new career-high. Ethan Stewart was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.

The win (which was D.H. Conley's eighth in a row) raised their record to 13-1. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Hoggard, they moved to 9-7 with that loss, which also ended their three-game winning streak.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. D.H. Conley will face off against New Bern at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Bears' pitching crew has only allowed 3.5 runs per game this season, so the Vikings' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
