Football Game Preview: Mt. Vernon Rams vs. Cahokia Comanches

Mt. Vernon hasn't had much luck against Cahokia recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Rams will host the Comanches at 7:00 p.m. Mt. Vernon has given up an average of 41.2 points per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

On Friday, Mt. Vernon ended up a good deal behind Althoff Catholic and lost 37-20.

Meanwhile, Cahokia had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 51 points) and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They came within six points of losing the streak, but they secured a 28-22 W against the Wildcats.

A big part of Cahokia's victory came down to the chemistry between Nigel Gooden and his top target Hartles Holman. Gooden threw for 201 yards and a pair of touchdowns while Holman picked up 78 receiving yards and one score. Holman was no stranger to the big play, connecting on a big catch that went for 61 yards.

Cahokia's run defense was locked in: Marion could only muster 3.2 yards per carry. The team can thank Malik Mazyun for the heroic effort on defense: he. Cahokia didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 7.5.

Cahokia didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Donald Collier and Earnest Winters. Mazyun was another major factor on D, picking up a sack and making 14 total tackles.

Cahokia's win bumped their record up to 4-1. As for Mt. Vernon, their loss dropped their record down to 1-4.

Mt. Vernon took a serious blow against Cahokia in their previous meeting back in October of 2024, falling 28-0. Thankfully for the Rams, Zion Taylor (who threw for 213 yards and two TDs while picking up 10.7 yards per attempt, and also punched in one touchdown on the ground) won't be suiting up this time.
