Basketball Recap: Sophia Ambriz's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Bonita Vista over Hoover

After flying high against Pacific Ridge on Thursday, Bonita Vista came back down to earth. The Bonita Vista Barons opened the new year with a less-than-successful 61-49 defeat to the Hoover Cardinals.

Bonita Vista lost on Friday despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Sophia Ambriz, who posted 17 points in addition to eight steals and seven boards. Another player making a difference was Shea Gonzalez, who had ten points and seven steals.

Even though they lost, Bonita Vista was working as a unit and finished the game with 12 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in February of 2024.

Hoover got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Jewel Parker out in front who put up 19 points. Parker's morning made it eight games in a row in which she has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Aniya Felder, who posted 17 points.

Bonita Vista's record now sits at 3-10. As for Hoover, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight contests, which provided a massive bump to their 8-5 record this season.

Bonita Vista and Brawley will face off at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday without much rest having both just played. As for Hoover, they and Mira Mesa will face off at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday without much rest having both just played. Mira Mesa will roll in looking for their ninth straight win, something Hoover surely won't give up without a fight.
