Basketball Game Preview: Godinez Fundamental Grizzlies vs. Segerstrom Jaguars

The Godinez Fundamental Grizzlies will challenge the Segerstrom Jaguars at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: both posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.

Godinez Fundamental is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They blew past Calvary Chapel 88-47 on Tuesday. With the Grizzlies ahead 46-25 at the half, the contest was all but over already.

Valeria Arcos had an outrageously good game as she went 8 for 11 from beyond the arc on her way to 26 points. The dominant performance gave her a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Brianna Lopez, who went 6 of 10 en route to 14 points along with six rebounds and four steals.

Meanwhile, Segerstrom came up short against Buena Park on Tuesday and fell 70-57. While losing is never fun, the Jaguars can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 299th, while the Coyotes are ranked 81st).

Godinez Fundamental will have to keep a close watch on Claudia Solis and Abby Quero, a pair of players who had a big impact on Segerstrom's prior game. Solis went 8 for 19 on her way to 22 points and four steals, while Quero posted 15 points in addition to eight steals and six boards. Quero has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last 24 times she's played. Another player making a difference was Stephanie Valenciano, who almost dropped a double-double on 12 points and nine rebounds.

The win snapped Godinez Fundamental's losing streak at three games and leaves them with a 13-8 record. As for Segerstrom, their defeat dropped their record down to 16-6.

Godinez Fundamental won a matchup that couldn't have been any closer when the teams last played back in January of 2024, slipping by Segerstrom 42-41. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was Segerstrom's Faith Ledesma, who almost dropped a double-double on 15 points and nine boards.
