Basketball Recap: Devaughn Short's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Ballou over St. Anne's-Belfield

Ballou extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to four on Saturday, dropping them down to 0-3. They took a 72-56 bruising from the St. Anne's-Belfield Saints. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Knights came into the matchup with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 26th in District of Columbia, while the Saints are ranked 102nd in Virginia).

Ballou's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Devaughn Short, who posted 11 points and four steals. Rasaun Cooper was another key player, putting up 13 points.

St. Anne's-Belfield's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-3. With that victory, they brought their scoring average up to 53.2 points per game.

Leading St. Anne's-Belfield to victory were Jayden Brown and Haden Morris. Brown put up 21 points along with six rebounds and four steals, while Morris scored 20 points and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Shamar Curley, who earned ten points and five boards.

Ballou has already played their next game, a 33-32 win against Anacostia on the 8th. As for St. Anne's-Belfield, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 70-53 victory against Miller School of Albemarle on the 10th.
