Basketball Recap: Helix Highlanders vs. Steele Canyon Cougars

After flying high against Fallbrook last Monday, Helix came back down to earth. The Helix Highlanders had to suffer through a 62-34 loss at the hands of the Steele Canyon Cougars. The Highlanders were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Cougars apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in December of 2022.

Helix lost on Friday despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Cheyenne McMillan, who posted 12 points and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Jordyn McMillan, who scored eight points and seven boards.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Steele Canyon to victory, but perhaps none more so than Amira Williams, who went 5 of 8 on her way to 15 points. Williams is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Brianda Benitez, who went 5 for 11 en route to 14 points along with eight assists and three steals.

Helix has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-9 record this season. As for Steele Canyon, their win was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 9-14.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Helix will square off against Granite Hills at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. That contest will pit two of the most dominant forwards against one another: McMillan and Kerstena Tomika. As for Steele Canyon, they will take on Grossmont at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Grossmont will roll in looking for their fifth straight victory, something Steele Canyon surely won't give up without a fight.
