Basketball Recap: Costa Mesa Comes Up Short

It's never fun to lose, and it's even less fun to lose 62-30, which was the final score in the Costa Mesa Mustangs's tilt against the Troy Warriors on Saturday. While losing is never fun, the Mustangs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 878th, while the Warriors are ranked 421st).

Costa Mesa's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Leilani Quero, who posted 13 points and six rebounds. Another player making a difference was Emi Kamikihara, who put up six points and eight rebounds.

Even though they lost, Costa Mesa smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in five consecutive matches.

Costa Mesa has been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-13 record this season. As for Troy, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven games, which provided a massive bump to their 7-12 record this season.

Costa Mesa will welcome Westminster at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Costa Mesa is facing Westminster at the right time seeing as Westminster is stuck on a seven-game losing streak. As for Troy, they will head out on the road to square off against Pacifica at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
