Basketball Recap: McKinleyville Comes Up Short

It's hard to turn regular season success into postseason wins, a fact McKinleyville can now relate to. They took a 34-27 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Moreau Catholic Mariners on Saturday.

Moreau Catholic was led to victory by Ava Bowens and Elisa Ortega. Bowens posted nine points along with seven boards and three blocks, while Ortega scored 15 points and four steals. That's the most steals Ortega has posted since back in December of 2024. Another player making a difference was Kaliya Kirkwood, who earned four points.

McKinleyville has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 18-11 record this season. Moreau Catholic has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 16 of their last 18 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 21-7 record this season.

McKinleyville does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Moreau Catholic, they will face off against Justin-Siena at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both teams are coming into the contest red-hot, with Justin-Siena sitting on 17 straight wins and Moreau Catholic on 15.
