Basketball Recap: Lacey Quintanilla's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Mt. Carmel over San Marcos

Mt. Carmel played a tough matchup on Friday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They came up short against the San Marcos Knights, falling 71-46. The Sundevils have struggled against the Knights recently, as the game was their third consecutive lost matchup.

Mt. Carmel lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Lacey Quintanilla, who posted nine points and five rebounds. What's more, Quintanilla also racked up two assists, the most she's had since back in December of 2024. Ariana Gonzalez was another key player, putting up 11 points in addition to five assists and five steals.

Even though they lost, Mt. Carmel smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 14 offensive boards in 11 consecutive games.

Mt. Carmel's record is now 10-10. As for San Marcos, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 13-8.

Mt. Carmel wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 59-33 loss against La Jolla on the 25th. As for San Marcos, they are taking a road trip to square off against San Pasqual at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The timing isn't great for San Pasqual: they have been struggling with three straight losses at home, while San Marcos has snatched up five consecutive wins on the road.
