Baseball Game Preview: Newton Rams vs. South Gwinnett Comets

Newton has gone a perfect 10-0 against South Gwinnett recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. The Rams will head out on the road to face off against the Comets at 5:55 p.m. Newton is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.8 runs per game this season.

Newton was handed a heart-breaking two-run loss in their last matchup, but they sure didn't let that happen against Mount Vernon on Friday. The Rams' pitchers stepped up to hand the Mustangs a 7-0 shutout. The Rams might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won ten contests by six runs or more this season.

Chris Guillory made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Newton is 8-2 when he allows at most one earned run, but 8-9 otherwise. Guillory was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, Newton let Devontae Hardeman and Jayce Yearwood run wild. Hardeman scored a run while going 2-for-3, while Yearwood scored a run while going 2-for-2. What's more, Hardeman posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in March. Robert 38 Jackson was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-2.

South Gwinnett played against Jackson County last Friday and lost via forfeit.

South Gwinnett's defeat was their 22nd straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 2-18. As for Newton, their record now sits at 16-11.

Newton took their win against South Gwinnett in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 12-1 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Rams since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
