Basketball Game Preview: Montgomery Aztecs vs. Central Spartans

Montgomery is 3-0 against Central since December of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Monday. The Montgomery Aztecs will take on the Central Spartans in a tournament on Monday. Both are strolling into their games after big wins in their previous games.

Central is hoping to do what Calexico couldn't on Saturday: put an end to Montgomery's winning streak, which now stands at three games. Montgomery ended the year with a bang, routing Calexico 48-27. Given the Aztecs' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 298th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 826th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

While Central didn't have the best season last year (they finished 10-15), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They were the clear victor by a 67-42 margin over La Jolla on Saturday. The Spartans have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won four matches by 25 points or more this season.

Central found their leader in sophomore Victoria Zamora, who posted 28 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Zamora has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Maryanne Barrett, who earned 12 points and five steals.

Montgomery is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine contests, which provided a nice bump to their 9-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 52.0 points per game. As for Central, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 8-4.

Everything came up roses for Montgomery against Central when the teams last played back in December of 2023, as the squad secured a 68-29 win. In that game, Montgomery amassed a halftime lead of 41-11, an impressive feat they'll look to repeat on Monday.
