Football Recap: Carmel Skates Past Columbus North with Ease

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Carmel). They really took it to the Columbus North Bull Dogs for the full four quarters, racking up a 56-7 win. With the Greyhounds ahead 35-0 at the half, the contest was all but over already.

Carmel's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jacob Bellin, who picked up 105 receiving yards and two scores, and also rushed for 31 yards. Bellin's longest reception was for an incredible 76 yards. Anthony Coellner was another key signal caller, throwing for 178 yards and three TDs while completing 81.2% of his passes.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Carmel was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 274 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 162 rushing yards in six consecutive games dating back to last season.

Carmel's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 4-1. Those home victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 46.0 points over those games. As for Columbus North, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-2.

Carmel and Columbus North should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Indiana Rankings. The Greyhounds (ranked third) will meet North Central (ranked 58th) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Columbus North will challenge Terre Haute North Vigo at 7:30 p.m. on Friday with a big rank advantage (32 vs. 166).
