High school baseball rankings: Georgia powerhouse Parkview opens at No. 1 in Preseason MaxPreps Top 25

By Kevin Askeland Feb 9, 2023, 9:00am

Panthers on the hunt for 10th state title since 1996 behind deep pitching staff.

St. Mary's Prep (Orchard Lake, Mich.) never moved from its preseason perch as the No. 1 team in the 2022 Preseason MaxPreps Top 25 high school baseball rankings, going wire-to-wire as the best team in the nation. Can Parkview (Lilburn, Ga.) do the same in 2023?

The Panthers return a deep pitching staff, powerful offensive lineup and a wealth of tradition that includes six state championships and three national titles over the past decade. Under Chan Brown, who MaxPreps picked as the Coach of the Decade in 2020, the Panthers edge out powerhouse teams from JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), Calvary Christian (Clearwater, Fla.) and the defending national champion Eaglets from St. Mary's Prep for the top spot.

Read on for a look at the Preseason MaxPreps Top 25 along with a list of 75 more teams to watch during the 2023 season.
1. Parkview (Lilburn, Ga.)
Coach: Chan Brown
2022 record: 30-8
Top returners: Garrett Lambert (Sr., P, .371, 32 RBI, 4 HR, 8-3 record, 1.36 ERA, Region MVP, all-state); Landon Stripling (Sr., P/1B, .433, 33 RBI, 6 HR, 9-2 record, 1.53 ERA, all-state); Ford Thompson (Jr., P, 6-3 record, 1.46 ERA, Region Pitcher of the Year, all-state second team); Thorpe Musci (Jr., P, 1-0, 3.23 ERA); Porter Berryman (So., P, 1-0, 0.00 ERA); Jon Holcomb (Jr., P, 1-0, 5.79 ERA); Cade Brown (Jr., 3B, .310, 19 RBI, all-state); Colin Houck (Sr., SS, .412, 15 HR, 44 RBI, all-state); Ali Banks (Jr., RF, .369, all-state); Makhi Buckley (Jr., OF); Ethan Finch (Jr., C, transfer from Camden County)
Outlook: Few teams have been as successful over the past 10 years or so as the Parkview Panthers. They have won 11 region championships over the past 13 years along with six state championship and three national championships. They could add to all of those totals this year thanks to the return of 27 pitching wins from last year's 30-win team as well as six returning starters and six all-state players. The Panthers also have one of the top coaches in the country in Chan Brown, who has a record of 519-167. The pitching staff is five deep with Lambert, Thompson, Stripling, Music and Berryman leading the way. The Panthers also have one of the nation's top home run hitters in Houck, who smashed 15 round-trippers last year. The schedule includes games with Florida powerhouses Jesuit (Tampa), IMG Academy, Venice and Sarasota. Parkview will also participate in the Perfect Game Showdown and will take on Georgia powers Lassiter, Buford, North Gwinnett and Grayson.

2. JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.)
Coach: Brett Kay
2022 record: 25-11, Southern Section champion, Southern California runner-up
Top returners: J.J. Hollis (Sr., P, 63 IP, 6-0, .778 ERA, Santa Barbara); Matthew Champion (Jr., P, 43 IP, 3-2, 1.97 ERA, LSU); Benjamin Reimers (Sr., P, 20.1 IP, 1-0, 2.44 ERA, Stanford); Brodie Purcell (Sr., P, 13 IP, 2-1, 4.33 ERA, USC); Jayden Graves (Sr., P, 7 IP, 0-0, 0.00 ERA); Casey Coady (P, 10.2 IP, 0-1, 1.96 ERA); Dominic Smaldino (Sr., P/1B, .327, 16 RBI, Cal-Berkeley); MacAllister Zawistoski (Sr., P, 3 IP, 2.62 ERA); Andrew Lamb (Sr., .396, 9 DB, 4 HR, 20 RBI, USC, MaxPreps Junior All-American); Trent Caraway (Sr., 3B, .338, 11 RBI, all-league second team); Jonathan Mendez (Sr., SS, .383, 12 RBI, Santa Barbara); Ryusei Fujiwara (Sr., 2B, .300, 20 RBI, Washington); Brandon Chang (Sr., .315, 5 DB, Brown); Jake Bourne (Sr., CF, .262, 9 RBI); Charlie Caruso (Jr., C/OF, Northwestern).
Outlook: The Lions have gotten off to a slow start each of the last two years only to come through for a Southern Section or Southern California championship each season. This year, JSerra Catholic has a pitching staff capable of sparking a strong start along with a defensive lineup that includes two of the program's best ever defenders according to coach Brett Kay in center fielder Jake Bourne and shortstop Jonathan Mendez. Kay says the team has 20 players back from last year including 16 pitchers and seven everyday starters. Top players include J.J. Hollis, an All-Southern Section selection, and Andrew Lamb, the Southern Section's player of the year. The Lions will get their usual test against a Trinity League schedule that includes two other teams in the Top 100 – Orange Lutheran and Santa Margarita – along with a trip to Cary (N.C.) to play in the National High School Invitational and the First Look High School Showdown in Arizona. "On paper, this team has the talent to rival the 2016, 2021 and 2022 teams as a team that has a chance to be great," Kay said. "Obviously excited about this group and this senior class."

3. Calvary Christian (Clearwater, Fla.)
Coach: Greg Olsen
2022 record: 26-2
Top returners: Landen Maroudis (SS/RHP, Sr., 7-1, 0.67 ERA, North Carolina State); Hunter Dietz (LHP, Sr., 8-1, 0.49 ERA); Liam Peterson (RHP/DH, Sr., 5-0, 0.75 ERA, Florida); Justin Mayes (LHP/OF, Sr., .250, Notre Dame); Blake Opie (OF, Sr., .340, University of South Florida); James Long (RHP, Sr., .250, Polk State College); Jaden Carlson (RHP, Sr., Covenant College); Paul Guerne (LHP, Sr., 1-0, 0.00 ERA, NYU); Alex Monile (OF/C, Sr., .200, Florida State College); Andrew Tess (C, Jr., .411, Pittsburgh); Jace Kohler (INF, Jr., High Point); Grayson Gibson (LHP, So., Ole Miss); Cameron Uzzillia (1B/RHP, So., .200, NC State).
Outlook: Coach Greg Olsen didn't mince words when asked to evaluate this year's Warrior team. "Our 2023 team could go down as the best team in Calvary history, " Olsen said. "Our strength will be in our pitching staff with three potential first round picks." Those three are Liam Peterson, Hunter Dietz and Landen Maroudis, who ranked Numbers 4, 10 and 11 respectively among seniors in the state of Florida by Perfect Game. Behind them, a total of 13 players are headed to play at the college level once they leave Calvary. Besides games against the usual Florida powers like Venice and Jesuit (Tampa), the Warriors will also test their mettle in the National High School Invitational.

4. St. Mary's Prep (Orchard Lake, Mich.)
Coach: Matt Petry
2022 record: 44-0, Division I state champion
Top returners: Blake Grimmer (Sr., 3B, .365, 12 DB, 8 HR, 49 RBI, Tennessee, MaxPreps Junior All-American); Jasen Oliver (Sr., SS/RHP, .386, 10 DB, 4 HR, 49 RBI, 13.1 IP, 0.53 ERA, Indiana); Ryan McKay (Sr., 2B/SS, .376, 9 DB, 3 HR, 34 RBI, 46 runs, .991 fielding percentage, Michigan); Parker Brzustewicz (Jr., 1B/OF/RHP, .360, 19 RBI, 6-0 record, 1.75 ERA, Notre Dame); Aidan Donovan (Jr., RHP/1B, 7-0 record, 0.92 ERA, Michigan).
Outlook: It would be hard to duplicate a 43-1 record and a state championship, yet last year's Eaglet team went above and beyond, becoming the first school to go wire-to-wire as the No. 1 team in the nation, post a 44-0 record (the best ever for a national champion) and win a state championship at a higher enrollment division. Again, it would be unfair to expect the Eaglets to repeat or improve over last year, but don't count them out. "While it would be difficult to repeat the last two seasons, we should compete for the Division 1 championship," coach Matt Petry said. "This team has a lot of experience on the top end, playing in a lot of pressure and high-profile games." The entire infield returns along with three of the top four pitchers from last year's group. Expect the Eaglets to battle for a fourth straight state championship.

5. Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.)
Coach: Mike Woods
2022 record: 29-4, Class 6A state champion
Top returners: Roch Cholowsky (Sr., MIF, .357, 7 DB, UCLA, all-state second team); Josh Tiedemann (Sr., UT/RHP, .371, 8 HR, 27 RBI, 7-0, 2.50 ERA, TCU, Class 6A Player of the Year); Ryan Kucherak (Sr., MIF/3B, .352, 7 HR, 33 RBI, second team all-state, LSU); Zach Wadas (OF/1B, Sr., .268, 5 HR, TCU); Liam Wilson (C, Sr., 3 HR, Harvard); Cooper Brass (2B, Sr., .282, New Mexico); Carson Johnson (RHP, Sr., Arizona); Will Shelor (RHP, Sr., Arizona); A.J. Diaz, (UT/RHP, Arizona); Jeter Mauzey (1B/OF, Sr., New Mexico State)
Outlook: When Queen Creek made the mistake of violating the pitch count rule in a playoff elimination game against Hamilton last year, the Huskies took advantage of the forfeit win and went on to claim their eighth state championship under coach Mike Woods. A ninth state championship isn't out of the question thanks to the return of seven position starters, including the entire infield. According to Perfect Game, Hamilton has five of the top 11 seniors in the state of Arizona, including the top two in Cholowsky and Wadas. Pitching will tell the story, according to Woods, as the Huskies return the top pitcher from last year in Tiedemann, who was the Class 6A conference player of the year. Tiedemann is the only returning starter, but Woods says he has some talented newcomers to join Tiedemann in the rotation. We will find out how good the Huskies are right out of the gate as they face Hoover (Ala.), El Dorado (Placentia, Calif.), Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.) and Bishop Verot (Fort Myers, Fla.) in the First Look Showdown in Arizona in late February.

6. Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, Calif.)
Coach:
Jared Halpert
2022 record: 22-8-1
Top returners: Tommy Bridges (RHP, Jr., 8-1, 1.98 ERA); Bryce Rainer (3B/RHP, Jr., .393, 21 RBI, 5 HR); William Gasparino (CF); Kai Caranto (MIF); Owen Carlson (MIF); Cade Goldstein; David Lozano (MIF/RHP); Duncan Marsten (RHP)
Outlook: The Wolverines have been a major player in the Southern Section for the past decade, winning championships in 2013 and 2021 and finishing among the top 10 teams in the state six times in the past 10 years. According to coach Jared Halpert, Harvard-Westlake has the potential for another record-setting offense after setting the school record for runs last year with 227. Halpert says the front line of the pitching staff can compete with the best but the overall staff lacks experience. In Bridges and Rainer, the Wolverines have two of the top juniors in the state of California. Harvard-Westlake will compete in the Prep Baseball Report Preseason Tournament, opening with Foothill (Santa Ana) and facing either Servite or Etiwanda in the second round. The tournament features most of the top teams in Southern California. The Wolverines will also play in the All Faiths Classic in Las Vegas in early April.

7. West Monroe (La.)
Coach: Wade Simoneaux
2022 record: 33-4, Class 5A state champion
Top returners: John Pearson (Jr., OF/P, .370, LSU, all-state); Trey Hawsey (1B/P, Jr., .407, Louisiana Tech, all-state); Hayden Federico (3B, .333, all-state, Ole Miss); Trent Anderson (2B, Sr., .283, Baton Rouge CC); Jack Cowan (P/1B, .545, Baton Rouge CC); Lytton Arledge (C, So.); Nolan Norris (Sr., OF, .233); Drew Ferguson (So., P, 5-1); Brennan Eager (Sr., P, 9-1, all-state)
Outlook: Despite fielding a lineup of mostly sophomores, West Monroe managed to win the Class 5A state championship last year, finishing ahead of defending national champion Barbe, which lost to St. Amant in the quarterfinals. According to coach Wade Simoneaux, the Rebel pitching staff is eight deep with the best staff in school history. Every single win returns from a 33-win team. The squad also has a good combination of power, speed and defense. Simoneaux acknowledges that it's tough to repeat as state champions but West Monroe has six players committed to play at the next level with a couple of potential MLB Draft picks.

8. IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.)
Coach:
Dave Turgeon
2022 record: 23-2
Top returners: Tayshaun Walton (OF, .476, 16 RBI, 2 DB, 4 TR, 2 HR); Stone Russell (SS, .342, 14 RBI, 3 DB, 5 TR); Cade Ladehoff (C,1B, .418, 22 RBI, 7 DB, 3 HR); Dean Moss (OF, .325, 21 RBI, 7 DB, 2 TR, 2 HR); Noah Franco (OF/LHP, .412, 19 RBI, 11 DB, 2 TR, 1 HR); Sean Gamble (INF, .434, 24 RBI, 4 DB, 6 TR, 4 HR); Andre Modugno (INF, 20 RBI, 2 2B, 6 HR); Jaewoo Cho (RHP, 2 Wins, 3.04 ERA, 23 IP, 30 K); Ryan Rushing (LHP, 4 Wins, 2.90 ERA, 38.2 IP, 70 K); Zion Rose (C/OF, transfer from Brother Rice); Cam Johnson (LHP, transfer from Maryland)
Outlook: A total of 14 players return from last year's team that finished ranked No. 4 in the MaxPreps Top 25. According to coach Dave Turgeon, the team has 16 players committed to Division I schools. "We will have a good mix of talented seniors, who will draw draft interest from pro scouts, and several very talented underclassmen. Team will be solid in all phases of the game." Newcomers this year include Cameron Johnson, a lefthanded pitcher ranked No. 2 in the nation among lefties by Perfect Game, and catcher Zion Rose, ranked No. 4 among catchers by Perfect Game. The Ascenders will aim for their third straight title at the Perfect Game Showdown and also have games scheduled against Jesuit (Tampa), Doral Academy and Parkview (Lilburn, Ga.).

9. Barbe (Lake Charles, La.)
Coach: Glenn Cecchini
2022 record: 36-4
Top returners: Presley Courville (So., C,.311 3 DB 2 TR, 15 RBI); Owen Galt (Jr., SS,.402, 11 DB, 34 RBI); Donovan LaSalle (Sr., CF, .312 10 DB, 5 TR, 3 HR, 39 RBI); Grant Trahan (Sr., OF, .378 4 DB, 2 TR, 2 HR, 26 RBI); J.C. Vanek (Sr., 1B/P, .374, 9 DB, 3 TR, 4 HR, 23 RBI, 31 SB; 8-2, 2.40 ERA 65 Ks); Diego Corrales (Jr., P, 7-1, 1.30 ERA, 51 K); Landon Victorian (Jr.,10-1, 1.04 ERA, 94 K, MaxPreps National Sophomore of the Year)
Outlook: Two years removed from finishing ranked No. 1 in the nation by MaxPreps, Barbe is back in the running for a national championship thanks to a strong pitching staff and a strong middle of the lineup. The Buccaneers have one of the top junior pitchers in the nation in Landon Victorian, who was the MaxPreps National Sophomore of the Year last season. He joins J.C. Vanek and Diego Corrales to account for 25 returning wins from last year. Vanek, Donovan LaSalle, Owen Galt and Grant Trahan give Barbe a formidable group of hitters in the middle of the lineup.

10. Huntington Beach (Calif.)
Coach: Benji Medure
2022 record: 25-9, Southern California Division 1 champion
Top returners: Raffaele Velazquez (C/1B. 391, 8 DB, 9 HR, Arizona State); Aidan Espinoza (CF/ LHP, .388, 33 runs, 5 DB, 3 TR, UCLA); Dean Carpentier (SS/RHP, .327, 3 HR, USC); Trent Grindlinger (C, .373, 14 RBI, Long Beach State); Brian Trujillo (2B, .306, 6 DB, 5 HR); Carson Lane (RHP, 3-1, 2.33 ERA. UNLV).
Outlook: The Oilers return 14 players who have committed to Division I schools and contributed to Huntington Beach's Southern California Division 1 championship last year. They should have a potent offense, powered by MaxPreps All-American Ralph Velazquez behind the plate. The Oilers play a rugged schedule that includes the Prep Baseball Report Preseason Tournament, the National High School Invitational and the Boras South Classic. Add in the Southern Section playoffs and the Oilers could be in contention for a national championship if they can navigate such a schedule relatively unscathed.

11. Villa Park (Calif.)
Coach: Burt Call
2022 record: 28-6
Top returners: Gavin Grahovac (SS, Sr., .375, 47 H, 17 DB, 3 TR, 5 HR, 24 RBI, Texas A&M, MaxPreps Junior All-American); Zach Brown (1B/RHP, Sr., .297, 30 H, 15 DB, 17 RBI, 2.96 ERA 5-2, 39 K, Ohio State); Brandon Luu (LHP, Sr., 1.24 ERA, 8-2, 84 K, UC Irvine); A.J. Krodel (RHP, Sr., 3.05 ERA, 7-2, 53 K, UC Irvine); Geoff McArthur (OF, Sr., .292 BA, 35 H, 4 DB, 1 TR, 1 HR); Justin Tims (Jr., 3B/RHP, .244 BA, 20 H, 4 DB, 1 TR)
Outlook: The Spartans were the surprise team in Southern California last year, posting their highest win total in well over two decades under former Mater Dei coach Burt Call. There won't be any surprises this year as Villa Park figures to be one of the top teams in the country thanks to the return of All-American Gavin Grahovac. Four of the top seven hitters return along with every pitching win from last year.

12. Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.)
Coach: Miguel Menendez
2022 record: 24-8, Class 5A state champion
Top returners: Wes Mendes (LHP/OF, Sr., 9-1, 1.15 ERA, 93 K, .422, 4 HR, Ole Miss, MaxPreps Junior All-American); Jake Kulikowski (OF, Sr., .307, 6 DB, 6 HR, Miami); Joshua Hines (C, Sr., .362, Florida Southern); Grant Jordan (3B, Sr., .354, 2 HR); Noah Sheffield (Florida State); Wilson Andersen (Fr.); Vincent DeCarlo (So., North Carolina State).
Outlook: Coach Miguel Menendez calls the 2023 Tigers the "deepest team I've ever had at Jesuit." That's a bold statement considering Jesuit has won two of its six state championships under Menendez, however a look at the lineup backs up his claim. The team has 13 players signed to play at the college level but Menendez says that number could grow to 20. The pitching staff is 10 deep, including MaxPreps All-American Wes Mendes, while the offensive lineup includes seven players who saw time last year. The Tigers also have two of the nation's top freshmen in Wilson Andersen and Florida State commit Noah Sheffield, son of former MLB All-Star Gary Sheffield.

13. Sinton (Texas)
Coach: Adrian Alaniz
2022 record: 36-1, Class 4A state champion
Top returners: Blake Mitchell (C/SS/RHP, Sr., .465 BA, 17 Doubles, 49 runs, 7 HR, 36 BB, 52 RBI; 6-0 w/ 3 saves, 67 K's, 0.39 ERA, LSU, Texas Gatorade State Player of the Year, MaxPreps All-American); Jaquae Stewart (1B/LHP, Sr.,414 BA, 10 Doubles, 31 Runs, 11 HR, 17 HBP, 52 RBI; 8-0 w/ 1 Save, 70 K's, 0.17 ERA, Texas Sports Writers Association Co-Player of the Year, Houston Christian); Braeden Brown (3B/SS/RHP, Sr., .363 BA, 11 Doubles, 23 Runs, 26 Runs, 23 RBI; 7-0 w/ 2 Saves, 64 K's, 1.24 ERA, 2nd Team All-State Pitcher, Sam Houston); Marco Gonzales (2B, Jr., .386 BA, 44 Hits, 6 Doubles, 2 Triples, 47 Runs, 15 RBI, 15 BB, 18 Stolen Bases, District Sophomore of the Year); Kaden McCoy (OF, Sr., .303 BA, 25 Hits, 8 Doubles, 2 Triples, 23 Runs, 20 RBI, 13 Stolen Bases, Texas Class 4A State Tournament Most Valuable Player, 1st Team All District OF); Aidan Moody (3B/RHP, Jr., .312 BA, 4 Doubles, 1 Triple, 12 RBI, 10 Runs, 10 BB, 7 SB; 3-0 1 Save, 33 K's, 0.60 ERA, 1st Team All District Pitcher); Nick Flores (INF, Jr., .275 BA, 5 Doubles, 11 Runs, 12 RBI, 6 BB, 2nd Team All District 3B)
Outlook: The Pirates knocked off two-time MaxPreps National Champion Argyle for the Class 4A championship and finished with just one loss to go with 36 wins. According to coach Adrian Alaniz, the Pirates return a large majority of the roster that "will be a year wise and mature from all the experiences 2022 brought us." A total of six starters return from the everyday lineup along with 25 of the team's 36 wins. Sinton can also boast two of the state's top players in Blake Mitchell, the Gatorade State Player of the Year, and Jacquae Stewart, who was the state player of the year by the Texas Sports Writers Association.

14. Stoneman Douglas (Parkland, Fla.)
Coach: Todd Fitz-Gerald
2022 record: 30-2, Class 7A state champion.
Top returners: Christian Rodriguez (RHP/1B, Sr., .355, 25 RBI, 7-1, 1.11 ERA, Florida); Devin Fitz-Gerald (SS/RHP, Jr., .364, North Carolina State); Rylan Lujo (3B, Jr., .347, 18 RBI); Nicholas Benestad (C/1B, Jr., .323, 14 RBI); Alex Rodriguez (CF, Jr., .429, Central Florida); Gavin Gargiulo (OF/RHP, Jr., Central Florida); Matthew Ossenfort (LHP/1B, Sr., Vanderbilt); Jayden Dubanewicz (RHP, Jr., Florida); Jacob Gomberg (LHP, Sr., Florida); Dillon Moquin (OF, Sr., .238, Appalachian State)
Outlook: The perennial Class 7A favorites and defending state champions, Stoneman Douglas returns a talented pitching staff that includes MaxPreps All-American Christian Rodriguez. He is one of three Florida commits on the pitching staff to go along with Vanderbilt commit Matt Ossenfort. The middle of the lineup will also be strong with Rylan Lujo, Alex Rodriguez, Devin Fitz-Gerald and Rodriguez. "We have a great balance of speed and power," said coach Todd Fitz-Gerald. "It will be exciting to see how we come out of the gate." The schedule includes a gauntlet of Florida opponents: Doral Academy, St. Thomas Aquinas, Taravella, Columbus, North Broward Prep and Bishop Verot.

15. Doral Academy (Doral, Fla.)
Coach: Ralph Suarez
2022 record: 25-4-1, Class 6A state champion
Top returners: Adrian Santana (.433, 25 RBI, 4 HR); Frank Menendez (6-2, 1.91 ERA); Michael Torres (So., .512, 32 RBI, 11 DBL, 4 HR, MaxPreps Freshman All-American); Justin Ruiz; Daniel Restrepo (.375, 34 RBI, 12 DBL, 5 HR); Pedro Acosta (.295, 13 RBI, 6 DBL, 5 TR); Sebastian Berrios (Jr., .239, 4 HR)
Outlook: The Firebirds are favored to repeat as the Class 6A state champions after returning all but three wins from last year's pitching staff to go along with eight of nine position players. The pitching staff also adds Pedro Acosta, who can hit 92 mph on his fastball, and Michael Torres, who was a MaxPreps Freshman All-American. Doral Academy will also participate in the National High School Invitational along with single games against Stoneman Douglas and IMG Academy.

16. Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati, Ohio)
Coach: Tim Held
2022 record: 29-3
Top returners: Charlie Niehaus (SS, Sr., .397, 16 RBI, Cincinnati); C.J. Richard (CF, Sr., .329, 7 DB, 3 HR, 23 RBI, Ohio State); Conner Christenson (IF, Sr., .319, 13 RBI, Air Force); Toby Hueber (P/2B, Sr., .314, 19 RBI, 9-1, 1.84 ERA, George Mason); Nathan Manley (C, Sr., .308, 4 HR, 21 RBI, Wright State); Clay Burdette (P/1B, .344, 10 RBI, 3-0, 14 K, Ohio State); Carson Marsh (P, Sr., 1-1, 40 K)
Outlook: Pitching and defense will be the key for the Fighting Crusaders as they return six Division I commits on the staff, led by Toby Hueber, Carson Marsh and Clay Burdette. The middle of the defense is also solid with Charlie Niehaus back at shortstop and C.J. Richard in center field. According to coach Tim Held, Moeller should be among the top contenders in the region and state due to the amount of returning pitchers and hitters the team has.

17. Southlake Carroll (Southlake, Texas)
Coach: Larry Vucan
2022 record: 34-8, Class 6A state champion
Top returners: Ethan Mendoza (SS., Sr., .406, 25 RBI, 15 DBL); Ben Tryon (3B, Sr., .466, 13 RBI); Tyler White (P, Sr., 1.07 ERA, 39 K)
Outlook: The Dragons have very few returning starters from last year's state championship team and it would be easy to dismiss Southlake Carroll from contention in Class 6A. That would be a mistake. Coach Larry Vucan points to the team's culture as a reason to expect continued success from the Dragons. "I feel confident in our youth and work ethic and I think we will face serious adversity that comes with our schedule, expectations and standards. I expect that we will be more competitive as the season progresses." The Dragons will face top teams from multiple states, including Magnolia Heights (Miss.), Deer Creek (Okla.), Mater Dei (Calif.), along with Texas powers Argyle, Marcus, Prosper and Keller.

18. Edwardsville (Ill.)
Coach:
Tim Funkhouser
2022 record: 36-4, Class 4A state champion
Top returners: Riley Iffrig (Sr., 1B, .433, 10 DBL, 3 HR, 32 RBI, Indiana State); Alex Marchetto (RHP, Jr., 6-1, 0.99 ERA, 43 K); Caeleb Copeland (Sr., OF, .422, 6 DBL, 24 RBI, St. Charles CC); Kayden Jennings (SS, Sr., .246, 6 DBL, 14 RBI, Illinois-Springfield); Cole Funkhouser (MIF, Sr., .289, 6 DBL, 19 RBI, Central Missouri); Joseph Chiarado (RHP/OF, So., 2-0, 1.34 ERA, Alabama); Andrew Hendrickson (Sr., IF, Lincoln Land CC); Jake Holder (Sr., RHP, 4-1, 1.83 ERA); Lucas Huebner (Jr., C, .391, 2 HR)
Outlook: The Tigers return nearly the entire infield and most of the pitching staff from last year's 4A championship team. Coach Tim Funkhouser says his team's overall depth will provide a balanced offensive attack, a high-level defense and a deep pitching staff. Edwardsville figures to be one of the top teams in the Midwest and will compete in two of the top tournaments in the area in the Metro East Kickoff Classic and the USA Baseball Classic in Tennessee.

19. Hartselle (Ala.)
Coach:
William Booth
2022 record: 39-4, Class 6A state champion
Top returners: Jo Williamson (IF, Jr., all-state); Coleman Mizell (OF, Sr., Class 6A Hitter of the Year); Peyton Steele (DH, Jr, all-state); Jack Smith (P, Sr.); Cade Miles (SS, Jr.)
Outlook: Coach William Booth picked up his ninth state title last year, tying him with two others for the second-most state championships in state history. He also has nearly 300 more wins in his career (1,158) than the next highest coach on the all-time state wins list. The Tigers boast three returning all-state players, including the Class 6A hitter of the year in Coleman Mizell.

20. Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.)
Coach: Eric Borba
2022 record: 25-5
Top returners: Casey Borba (3B, Sr., .366, 6 HR, 29 RBI, MaxPreps Junior All-American); Derek Curiel (CF, .275, 11 RBI); Ben Reiland (LF, Sr., .306, 12 RBI); Evan Miranda (RHP, Sr., 5-0, 1.23 ERA)
Outlook: Although six starters have graduated, the Lancers still figure to be in contention in the Trinity League and the Southern Section. In addition to returning MaxPreps Junior All-American Casey Borba, the Lancers also have the nation's No. 1 junior Derek Curiel, as rated by Perfect Game. According to coach Eric Borba, pitching will be the team's strength. The pitching staff will be young and talented, according to Jeans, with three-year starter Cal Randall leading the way. The team should have speed and defense, but will have to replace the offense from last year. The schedule should be tough as always as the Spartans regularly take on the top teams in Northern California. Last year, the Spartan opponents had a combined record of 238-96.

The pitching staff should be solid with Tanner Sauls and Jackson McKenzie each returning after winning 8 games last year. The pitching staff also returns its top four arms from last year with two of them committed to DI schools. The Eagles also will compete in the National High School Invitational along with the Boras Classic.

2022 record: 29-12
Top returners: Ethan Holliday (So., 3B, .363, 10 HR, 12 DBL, 53 RBI); Gage Gundy (Sr., 1B, .453, 14 HR, 16 DB, 52 RBI); Owen Coil (Jr., 2B, .295, 5 HR, 12 DB, 27 RBI, Oral Roberts); Anthony Smith (Sr., RF/RHP, .343, 3 HR, 13 DB, 31 RBI); Landon Littau (Jr., OF/LHP, .391, 6 DB, 21 RBI); Parker Jeffery (Jr., C, .306, 2 HR, 13 DB, 21 RBI); Talon Kendrick (Jr., CF/RHP) Blake Aziere (Jr., RHP); Barrett Morgan (Sr., RHP).

Stillwater also has Gage Gundy, the school's quarterback, at first base and Owen Coil, one of the state's top juniors. "Our offense could be very dangerous," coach Jimmy Harris said. "Our pitching depth is much deeper than last season and we return seven position players from last year."

49. St. Johns Country Day (Orange Park, Fla.)
Coach: Tom Lucas
2022 record: 23-5
Top returners: Kody Daneault (Jr., OF, .408, 2 HR); Kyle Boylston (Jr., OF, .422, 8 DBL); Jacob Thomas (Sr., LHP, .353, 4-1); Shawn Andrade (Sr., SS, .312, 2 HR); Isaiah Mamea (Sr., RHP, 2.172 ERA); Kellen Brown (Sr., 2B, .333).
Outlook: The Spartans had a strong showing at the National High School Invitational last year, finishing second to Stoneman Douglas. St. Johns reached the elite eight in the state playoffs and have nine players committed to play college ball next year including five at the Division I level. Pitching will be a strength with four pitchers getting up into the 90s. The Spartans also will be athletic on defense with a DI commit in Shawn Andrade anchoring the infield at shortstop.

50. T.C. Roberson (Asheville, N.C.)
Coach:
Eric Filipek
2022 record: 22-8
Top returners: Nick Parham (Sr., SS/RHP, .375, 3 HR, 21 RBI); Reno Jeter (Jr., OF/RHP, .392, 36 RBI, 8 HR, 5-1, 3.00 ERA, league player of the year); Micah Simpson (So., LHP, 7-2, 44 K, 3.30 ERA); Caden Davidson (So., 1B, .345, 8 DB, 23 RBI); Tyler Kytta (Sr., OF/DH, .330, 19 RBI, 6 DBl, Limestone); J.T. Outlook: The host team for this year's National High School Invitational, T.C. Roberson could be favored to win the event. A total of seven starters return from last year's team including the top six hitters on the team. The No. 1 and 2 pitchers from last year are also back along with the team's close. "We have lots of young talent that will be a year more mature and received a great deal of experience making a long playoff run last year," coach Eric Filipek said.

51. Sulphur (La.)
Coach: Sam Moore

Top returners: Jake Brown (P/OF, Sr., .477, 28 RBI, 8-3, 131 Ks); Dillion Bird (Sr., 1B, .391, 33 RBI); Bryce Fontenot (Jr., IF, .347, 4 HR, 29 RBI); Gage Trahan (Sr., SS, .352, 35 RBI); Cooper Devall (Sr., C, .301, 22 RBI); Luke Benoit (Sr., C/3B, .304, 16 RBI); Kohl Navarre (Sr., P/OF, .316, 6-1, 46 Ks); Landon Arrant (Sr., P, 5-1, 21 Ks); Carson Cauvin (Jr., P, 4-2, 30 Ks)
Outlook: Experience and depth will be the key for Sam Moore's Golden Tors, who reached the Class 5A state semifinals before falling to St. Amant. A total of nine players saw quality time on the field last year with 23 wins returning. Leading the way on the mound is pitcher Jake Brown, who is ranked No. 1 in the state by Perfect Game.

52. Puyallup (Wash.)

Outlook: The Vikings were very young last year yet they still reached the Class 4A state championship game, only to lose by one run. Experience won't be an issue this year, however, as eight players with significant playing time return along with pitcher Michael LeJuene, a Gonzaga commit who has transferred in from Bellarmine Prep. "We will be very strong up the middle and we expect to be a state contender once again," Wiese said.

53. Miami Christian (Miami, Fla.)
Coach: Chris Cuadra
2022 record: 29-3, 2A state champion
Top returners: Chris Diaz (P, 5-1, 2.37 ERA, .415, 25 RBI, Miami); Jeter Polledo (SS, Sr., .375, 30 RBI, Wake Forest); Jesus Mosegue (OF, Sr., .410, 20 RBI); David Bosque (P, Sr., 4-1, 32 Ks, 2.75 ERA); Fabio Peralta (CF, Jr., .385, 20 RBI, Miami); Willy Mendez (Jr., CF.); Jendy Gonzalez (SS, Jr.).
Outlook: With three state titles in five seasons, Chris Cuadra has built quite a tradition at Miami Christian. That won't change in 2023 as he expects to have lots of speed in the lineup, a lock down defense and a deep pitching staff coming off last year's Class 2A state championship. The Victors have seven pitchers returning who combined for 14 wins last year.

54. Freeman (Richmond, Va.)
Coach: Ray Moore
2022 record: 23-4, Class 5 state champion
Top returners: Lee Sowers (SS/RHP, Jr., .426, 27 RBI, Virginia Tech); Ryan Bland (RHP/UT, Jr., 2.71 ERA, .338); Michael Warren (OF/IF, .388, Jr., all-state second team); Jonah Herbert (1B/DH, Sr., all-state second team, .394, 5 DBL); Miguel Martin (OF/UT, Sr., .323); Hugh Whipple (OF, So., Virginia).
Outlook: Although 13 players graduated from last year's state championship team, coach Ray Moore feels his squad should be able to compete again in 2023. "We have a fair amount of players returning who were able to experience the postseason run to our 2022 Class 5 state championship so we will be more battle tested than is usually the case," said Moore. Freeman returns two the top pitchers off of last year's squad in Lee Sowers and Ryan Bland.

55. Northwest Rankin (Brandon, Miss.)
Coach: K.K. Aldridge
2022 record: 34-3, Class 6A state champion
Top returners: Dawson Munzenmay (OF, .315, 2 HR, 26 RBI, 3-0, 2.29 ERA Hinds CC); Powell Ingram (.324, 3 HR, 15 RBI, 3-0, 2.40 ERA, Hinds CC); Chase Brown (Sr., RHP/C, .286); Tucker Jones (.280); Cruse Lloyd, Trey Davidson, Langston Cotten (SS), Bryson Jones, Currie Jones (Sr., LHP); Wes White (Jr., RHP, 1-0, 4.06 ERA), Sam Monistere (P, Sr.); Ross Simmons (Sr., LHP); Austin Allen (Jr., P/OF); Cy Mooney (Sr., RHP/3B, 4.41 ERA, 59 Ks. .447); Aiden Tuura (Jr., RHP, 1.55 ERA, 15 Ks)
Outlook: The Cougars have averaged 27 wins per season over the past 11 non-COVID years, including a high of 34 wins last year while winning the Class 6A state championship. While much of the pitching staff has graduated and only three everyday starters return, Northwest Rankin still figures to be in the mix among the top teams in Mississippi.

56. Walsh Jesuit (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio)
Coach: Joe Bowers
2022 record: 22-6
Top returners: Joey Canzoni (.337, 4 HR, 23 RBI, Cincinnati); Alejandro Covas (.278, 15 RBI, Youngstown State); Mason Eckelman (.430, 4 HR, 26 RBI, Ohio State); Topher Salek (.279); John Simecek (.351, 25 RBI); Justin Bremer (.316, Canisius); Drew Erdmann (5-2, 1.19 ERA, 47 K, Cincinnati); Ryan Piech (7-2, 1.02 ERA, Xavier); Jack Paulus (3-0, 1.57 ERA, Miami)
Outlook: Joe Bowers takes over for longtime coach Chris Kaczmar at Walsh Jesuit and inherits a squad that includes 20 seniors who reached the Division 1 quarterfinals last year. The starting pitching is deep with Ryan Piech and Drew Erdmann each in their third year. The Warriors also have one of the best catchers in the state in Mason Eckleman. "With a good amount of starters back from last year our defense should be one of the tops in the state," Bowers said.

57. Farragut (Knoxville, Tenn.)
Coach: Matt Buckner
2022 record: 30-11-1, Class 3A state champion
Top returners: Lukas Buckner (SS, Jr., .451, 20 RBI, 9 DBL, 2 HR, Central Florida); Jett Johnston (IF/RHP, Sr., .325, 30 RBI, 7 HR, 6 DBL, Texas A&M); Brennon Seigler (OF/Jr., .344, 6 DBL, Tennessee); Stratton Scott (RHP, Jr., 4-0, 2.10 ERA, Tennessee); Landis Davila (OF, Jr., .298, 34 RBI, 3 HR, 6 DBL, Virginia Tech); Eli Evans (IF, Jr., .305, 13 DB, 6 HR, East Tennessee State); Mark Underwood (OF, Sr., .391, 19 RBI).
Outlook: The Admirals have won 10 state championships in the past 20 years, including last season. Farragut always fields a competitive squad under coach Matt Buckner and has averaged 36 wins a season over the past 10 non-COVID seasons. Farragut returns at least six players headed to Division I schools, led by Lukas Buckner, who made all-region honors.

58. Pope (Marietta, Ga.)
Coach: Chris Turco
2022 record: 33-7, Class 6A state champion
Top returners: Carson Kerce (SS/P, Sr., .381, 9 DBL, 7 TRI, 2 HR, 35 RBI, Georgia Tech); Kent Schmidt (1B/3B, Sr., .463, 7 DB, 2 HR, 39 RBI, Georgia Southern); Jack Myers (IF, Jr., .303, 21 RBI, Georgia Southern); Blythe Keisler (LHP, Sr., 1.09 ERA, Augusta State); Cooper Orr (MIF, Sr., .368, 7 DBL, 24 RBI); Dawson Jones (LHP, Jr., 1-1, 5.40 ERA)
Outlook: Pope has won five state championships since 2009 including one last year. According to coach Chris Turco, the team returns four infield starters from a team that fielded .954 last year, as well as four of the team's top hitters. "We should be able to hold our own but it may take a few games to gain the experience we need," Turco said.

59. O'Connor (Phoenix, Ariz.)
Coach: Jeff Baumgartner
2022 record: 22-10
Top returners: Josh Butler (P/1B, Sr., 2-1, 1.03 ERA, Arizona State); Ky McGary (OF, Jr., .414, 6 DBL, Arizona State); Jake Sanko (SS, Jr., .386, 10 DBL, 2 HR)
Outlook: The Eagles return seven of the top eight pitchers from last year's team to go along with six starters. "If we can get adequate catching, we should be able to compete against anyone," coach Jeff Baumgartner said. "We lost a four-year starter behind the dish, but we have 11 seniors and four juniors returning from last year's team."

60. North Broward Prep (Coconut Creek, Fla.)
Coach:
Brian Campbell
2022 record: 23-9, 3A state champion
Top returners: Ryan McPherson (P, Jr., 5-0, 1.64 ERA, 51 Ks, All-Broward County); Gian De Castro (3B, Jr., .287, 22 RBI, All-Broward County second team).
Outlook: The Eagles have gotten off to a slow start each of the past two seasons, only to rebound and win the state championship. In 2021, they were just 13-10-1 heading into the playoffs, but ended up winning the 4A state title. Last year, the Eagles were 7-8 at one point, but went 16-1 down the stretch to win the 3A championship. Six of the top nine offensive performers from last year return with 10 pitching wins.

61. Live Oak (Watson, La.)
Coach:
Jesse Cassard
2022 record: 30-11
Top returners: Hunter Owens (LHP, 5-0, 1.38 ERA); Braxton Demopolis (RHP, Sr., 2-0, 0.00 ERA); Cam Christ (RHP/OF, Sr., 3-1, 2.09 ERA); Cooper Smith (C, So., .290); Brock Davis (So., SS, .289); Hayden Everett (Sr., OF, .319); Lane Lusk (2B, Sr., .333); Jude Weller (So., RHP).
Outlook: A victim of St. Amant's strong playoff run last year (the Gators also eliminated defending national champion Barbe), Live Oak will be back in the hunt this year. According to coach Jesse Cassard, the Eagles have topline pitching and pitching depth and can also field 4-5 left handed hitters in the offensive lineup. Cassard says he expects his team to compete for a state title in 2023.

62. Har-Ber (Springdale, Ark.)
Coach: Dustin Helmkamp
2022 record: 26-8
Top returners: Ross Felder (RHP/SS, .351, 7 DB, 21 RBI, 8-1, 76 K, Arkansas); Austin Jones (RHP/CF, 3-1, 1.04, 38 K, Central Arkansas); Tyler Ridley, (P, Sr., 34 K, 1.56 ERA); Kaleb Kellar (SS, Sr., Arkansas-Little Rock); Jeff Zachry (LHP/OF, Sr, .333); Gavin Moore (RHP, Jr., 6-1, 2.45 ERA)
Outlook: The Wildcats have been in the state finals four of the past five seasons with a state championship in 2018. They have also been to the state semifinals the past eight years. Coach Dustin Helmkamp expects to keep that tradition going with a team he says might be the most talented Har-Ber has had during his tenure. The pitching staff looks stellar with Arkansas-bound righty Ross Felder, Gavin Moore and Austin Jones. Meanwhile Ty Ridley was 7-0 as a sophomore before suffering an arm injury last year. "These guys will keep us in every game," said Helmkamp. "We are very strong defensively with a lot of team speed."

63. American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.)
Coach: Mike Macey
2022 record: 26-2
Top returners: Spencer Butt (.380, 18 RBI, 38 runs); Mateo Serna (.350, 6 HR, 25 RBI); Andrew Ortiz (.300, 24 RBI); Zain Diaco (.275, 5 HR, 18 RBI); Lucas Ramirez (.242); Chris Levy; Jorge Machado; Daniel Gregory (3.60 ERA)
Outlook: Second-year coach Mike Macey has the unenviable task of replacing a starting pitcher who was drafted in the middle of the first round along with several other starters who signed with Division I schools. However the offensive lineup returns all but two starters from last year and Macey says his team should have more team speed than in the past. American Heritage is always in the mix for the state playoffs and 2023 shouldn't be any different.

64. Argyle (Texas)
Coach: Ricky Griffin
2022 record: 35-4-1, Class 4A state runner-up
Top returners: J.C. Davis (Sr., SS, District defensive MVP); Colton Roquemore (Jr., 2B, all-area first team); Park Prater (Jr., CF/LHP, district MVP); Hudson Emeterio (Jr., RHP, Baylor, all-district); Micah Roberts (Jr., 3B, all-district); Conor Lillis (Sr., LF, all-district); Alex D'Angelo (Jr., RF/LHP, all-district); Hunter Sandifer (Sr., C, all-district).

The Eagles move up to 5A this year and coach Ricky Griffin says the plan is to compete and win a state championship. Argyle returns eight all-district players, including MVP Park Prater in centerfield and district defensive MVP J.C. Davis at shortstop.

65. Faith Lutheran (Las Vegas)
Coach: Dave Anderson
2022 record: 21-13
Top returners: Zane Kelly (OF, .320, 8 DBL); George Holt (.391, 30 RBI, 10 DBL); Miller Durham (1B, .402, 39 RBI, 8 HR); Brandon Swanson (.398, 8 DBL, 4 HR); Michael Albanese (.373, 9 DBL); L.J. Mercurius (RHP, Sr.).
Outlook: Neither Basic nor Bishop Gorman has the top-rated player in the state of Nevada. That honor goes to Faith Lutheran, which has L.J. Mercurius on its roster. The senior right handed pitcher is ranked No. 1 in the state by Perfect Game. The Crusaders got stronger as the season went along last year, registering wins over both Basic and Bishop Gorman.

66. Highland (Warrenton, Va.)
Coach: Micah Higgins
2022 record: 29-2
Top returners: Brenen Card (LHP, Sr., 9-0, 1.20 ERA); Blagen Pado (OF, Sr., .423); Luke Craddock (1B, Sr., .333, 24 RBI); Kehler Hamilton (OF/RHP, Sr., .379, 3 HR, 10 DBL, 21 RBI); Ryan Gimbel (3B, Sr., .342, 3 HR, 17 RBI); John Noah Lukonis (RHP, Sr., 3-1, 0.53 ERA, 27 Ks); Owen Winebarger (LHP, Sr., 2-0, 3.67 ERA, 25 K); Joey Rogers (So., SS, .304); Brooks Graham (OF/IF, .545).
Outlook: Highland won the VISAA Division 2 championship last year and returns six pitchers committed to play at Division 1 schools. According to coach Micah Higgins, this is the deepest squad the Hawks have ever had. "We also have a balanced and deep lineup with great team speed and power to sprinkle in. It should make our offense tough to navigate," Higgins said. He also noted that this year's squad could be even better than last year's team that won 29 games.

67. Westlake (Austin, Texas)
Coach: J.T. Blair
2022 record: 27-8
Top returners: Blake Peterson (Sr., OF, .301); Aiden Bennett (Sr., IF, .306); Nathan Duvall (Sr., IF/P, 8-2, district MVP); Ben Longoria (Sr., C, .322); Theo Gillen (Jr., IF, .465); Sage Sanders (Jr., IF, .265); Ty Shapiro (Sr., OF, .412); Chance Covert (Jr., P, 6-3, 1.56 ERA); Magnus Nelson (Sr., P, 6-1); Cooper Berry (Sr., IF, .366)
Outlook: The Chaparrals made an early exit from the Class 6A playoffs last year, losing in the area finals. However 10 starters return from that squad, including district MVP Nathan Duvall. Westlake also has one of the state's top juniors in shortstop Theo Gillen, who is ranked No. 3 in the state by Perfect Game.

68. Legacy (Broomfield, Colo.)
Coach: Ty Giordano
2022 record: 27-4, Class 5A runner-up
Top returners: Brandon Sanchez (Sr., SS/2B, .523, 42 RBI); Marcus Romero (Sr., OF, .347, 28 RBI); Derek Olsen (Sr., C, .329, 22 RBI); Ethan Sanchez (So., OF/LHP, .360, 32 RBI); Wes Barnett (Sr., 1B/DH, .352); Jaidon D'Ambrosio (Sr., RHP, 3-1); Kullen Lerma (Jr., RHP, 2-0); Senan Heys (Sr., RHP, 5-0).
Outlook: According to coach Ty Giordano, Legacy should be competitive in all three phases with pitching depth and above average team speed. Legacy lost in the state finals to Broomfield last year but returns Brandon Sanchez, who was one of just four juniors to earn Class 5A all-state honors last year.

69. South Brunswick (Southport, N.C.)
Coach: Christopher Sotriffer
2022 record: 25-5, Class 3A state runner-up
Top returners: Walker Jenkins (OF, Sr., .527, 10 HR, 40 RBI, 49 runs, Gatorade State Player of the Year); Banks Hartman (OF/LHP, .391, 28 RBI); Luke Dilgard (IF, .386)
Outlook: The state runner-up in Class 3A last year, South Brunswick could be better defensively this year with good team speed, according to coach Christopher Sotriffer. The Cougars are fortunate to have the nation's top prospect, according to Perfect Game, in outfielder Walker Jenkins. The state's Gatorade State Player of the Year as a junior, Jenkins is pegged as one of the top five picks in this year's MLB Draft.

70. Mason (Ohio)
Coach: Curt Bly
2022 record: 27-5
Top returners: Drew Cox (Sr., MIF, .438, Ohio); Michael Murphy (Sr., RHP, .365, 10 DB, 31 RBI, 61 K, Michigan); Sean Krueckeberg (Sr., OF, .293, Ashland); Alex Koelling (Jr., OF/MIF, .229, Ohio State); Jake Hanley (Jr., 1B/P, .340, 18 RBI, Indiana); Anthony Sulek (Jr., MIF, .240); Mark Rutherford (Jr., C/3B, Auburn); Nick Stroud (Sr., C/IF).
Outlook: Coach Curt Bly feels his team's offensive attack should be the key to success in 2023. "We expect to compete at a high level and challenge for our 5th consecutive Greater Miami Conference championship," Bly said. "We expect to be a strong offensive club that can score runs in multiple ways." Although Mason lost its top two pitchers from last year, Michael Murphy figures to be the team's ace this year.

71. Malvern Prep (Malvern, Pa.)
Coach: Freddy Hilliard
2022 record: 26-4
Top returners: Charlie Oschell (RHP, Sr., 6-2, 1.63 ERA, 50 Ks, Virginia); Trey Tiffan (1B/3B, Sr., .437, 5 HR, 38 RBI, Elon); Tim Dickinson (MIF, Sr., .309, 15 RBI, St. Joseph's); Tague Davis (1B/LHP, Jr., .262, 23 RBI, 8 HR, Louisville); Jonathan Holt (3B/SS, Jr., .277, Notre Dame); Matt Tsiaras (C, Sr., .265, Lehigh); Cam Marcum (RHP, Sr., 4-0, 0.75 ERA); Mason Clark (C/OF, Jr., Boston College); Grant Kennedy (CF, Jr., .379, Richmond); Jack Stead (MIF, Sr.); D.J. Peterson (LHP, Jr, Yale).
Outlook: Competing in the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association, Malvern Prep doesn't play for a state championship but it still could be the state's overall best team. The Friars return 75 percent of last year's innings and have a number of players returning from a team that was supposed to be rebuilding, according to coach Freddy Hilliard, but instead ended up winning 26 games.

72. Andrean (Merrillville, Ind.)
Coach: Dave Pishkur
2022 record: 31-4, Class 3A state champion
Top returners: Mason Barth (SS, soph, .410, 7 DBL, 43 RBI, Notre Dame); Garrett Benko (Sr., P, 3-0, 3.5 ERA, St. Xavier); Caleb Smith (Sr., UT, .250, Mars Hill); Moises Vazquez (Jr., OF)
Outlook: The offense for the Fighting 59ers should be as good as last year's team, which won the class 3A state championship. Coach Dave Pishkur, who is the state's all-time winningest coach, says that the pitching staff has quality arms, but they just need some experience. "We have plenty of good arms with little experience," Pishkur said. "Time will tell, but I think this team can be really good."

73. Blue Valley West (Stilwell, Kan.)
Coach: Joe Allison
2022 record: 23-2, Class 6A state champion
Top returners: Austin Young (RHP, Sr., 8-1, 2.01 ERA, 58 Ks, all-state, Baylor); Ari Shafton (RHP, Sr., 2-1, 31 K, all-state honorable mention); Zach Darche (3B/DH, .364, 12 DBL, 18 RBI, Penn); Barrett Donaldson (C, Sr., .281, 3 HR, all-state honorable mention); Joseph Lock (OF, Sr., .344, 12 RBI)
Outlook: Pitching will not be an issue for Blue Valley West as the defending 6A state champions return the top two arms from last year's team, including arguably the state's best player in Austin Young. According to coach Joe Allison, the middle of the lineup includes one of the best bats in the state in Zach Darche. "We have an outstanding group of young men that are talented and working hard," Allison said. "We will look to our six returning starters to lead by example and show the new players what it takes to be successful."

74. Woodstock (Ga.)
Coach: Jeff Brown
2022 record: 33-7, Class 7A state champion
Top returners: Kevin Maurer (LHP, Sr., 9-3 record, 99 K, 2.19 ERA, all-region); Colin Bryant (RHP, Sr, 7-0, 1.29 ERA); Jack Poor (OF, Sr, .277); Brooks McKenna (IF, Sr., .288, 17 RBI, all-region); Hudson Casdia (C, Sr., .233); Mark May (IF, Sr, .213).
Outlook: The Class 7A state champions move down to Class 6A this year and will be among the state favorites. According to coach Jeff Brown, Woodstock returns 80 percent of the pitching staff from last year. "With many of the players being part of the 2022 championship, we are ready and eager to get back on the field and see what we can do in 2023," said Brown.

75. Reagan (San Antonio, Texas)
Coach: Chans Chapman
2022 record: 33-7-1, Class 6A state runner-up
Top returners: Ashton Beaird (2B, Sr., .380, 35 runs); Brennan Greer (P/1B, .365, 11 DBL, 4 HR, 38 RBI, 6-1, 2.15 ERA); Andrew Ermis (C, Sr., .315, 6 DBL, 8 HR, 41 RBI); Luke Sasser (OF, Sr., .360, 30 runs); Aidan Coleman (P/SS, Sr., .280, 9-1, 1.15).
Outlook: Reagan made a strong run at the Class 6A state finals, falling to state champion Southlake Carroll. A total of five starters return from that team and coach Chans Chapman has reasons for optimism. "This lineup has a chance to be really good," Chapman said. "Top two pitchers are solid with several young guys that are talented and can contribute. We hope to get back to the state championship game and win it."

76. Stockdale (Bakersfield, Calif.)
