Preview: Redwood Christian Eagles vs. Athenian Owls
The Redwood Christian Eagles will be playing at home against the Athenian Owls at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Redwood Christian has seven straight wins, Athenian has six straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Even though Redwood Christian has not done well against Head-Royce recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. Redwood Christian skirted past Head-Royce 53-50. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory Redwood Christian has posted yet this season.
Nia Rogers was her usual excellent self, scoring 39 points along with six steals. That makes it 20 consecutive games in which she has scored at least a third of Redwood Christian's points. Chisom Nwebube was another key contributor, scoring nine points.
Meanwhile, Athenian was beaten by Head-Royce 63-17 on Tuesday. While losing is never fun, Athenian can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1179th, while Head-Royce is ranked 524th).
Redwood Christian is on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 13 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 14-6 record this season. As for Athenian, they dropped their record down to 1-7 with that defeat, which was their ninth straight on the road.
Everything came up roses for Redwood Christian against Athenian when the teams last played last Wednesday as the team secured a 69-27 win. With Redwood Christian ahead 41-12 at the half, the match was all but over already.
