Basketball Recap: Canyon Springs Falls Despite Big Games from Izabella Tejada and Kaleayah Marshall

If Canyon Springs was riding high fresh off their 56-21 takedown of JW North last Monday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Canyon Springs Cougars fell 50-41 to the Hemet Bulldogs on Wednesday. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Bulldogs this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 52-46 back in January.

Despite the defeat, Canyon Springs had strong showings from Kaleayah Marshall, who dropped a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds, and Izabella Tejada, who posted 11 points along with eight assists and seven boards. Marshall's evening made it three games in a row in which she has scored at least 15 points.

Even though they lost, Canyon Springs smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in 45 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Hemet found their leader in sophomore Ruby Gonzalez- Horta, who dropped a double-double with 12 points and 12 boards. Gonzalez- Horta is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last 11 games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Ruby Lindsey, who put up 13 points and three steals.

Canyon Springs' loss dropped their record down to 19-6. As for Hemet, they pushed their record up to 22-4 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road.

When Canyon Springs and Hemet next hit the court, they'll be up against teams who recently just can't seem to lose. Canyon Springs will try to stop Tustin's three-game winning streak when the meet at 7:00 p.m. on February 13th. Canyon Springs is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 52.8 points per game this season. Similarly, Hemet will challenge Ramona and their four-game winning streak at 7:00 p.m. on February 13th.
