Basketball Recap: Mount Miguel Comes Up Short

Mount Miguel was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their sixth straight loss. They were outmatched by the Montgomery Aztecs and fell 62-16. While losing is never fun, the Matadors can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1088th, while the Aztecs are ranked 229th).

Despite the loss, Mount Miguel still got an impressive performance from Laylah Castro, who posted nine points. That was a full 56.3% of Mount Miguel's points, marking the fourth time in a row she's put up more than a third of the team's points.

Paula Zumstein was her usual excellent self, shooting 4-for-5 from beyond the arc and dropping a double-double on 20 points and 16 boards for Montgomery. Zumstein is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last seven games she's played. Another player making a difference was Cary Brown, who almost dropped a double-double on 11 points and nine rebounds.

Mount Miguel's defeat dropped their record down to 2-11. As for Montgomery, their victory bumped their record up to 7-4.

Mount Miguel didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 2-0 loss against Calexico on the 27th. As for Montgomery, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 54-36 win against Morse on the 27th.
