Basketball Recap: Whittier Comes Up Short

Whittier was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their fifth straight defeat. They took a 37-25 hit to the loss column at the hands of the El Rancho Dons . The Cardinals were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Dons apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January of 2024.

Despite the loss, Whittier still got an impressive performance from Kassandra Mendoza, who posted six points and three steals. Mendoza is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last seven games she's played.

Among those leading the charge was Carissa Basurto, who earned six points in addition to eight rebounds and four steals. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in blocks (three). Ariel Marquez was another key player, putting up nine points and three steals.

Whittier's defeat dropped their record down to 8-14. As for El Rancho, their win bumped their record up to 18-6.

Coincidentally, both will both be playing La Serna the next time they take the court. El Rancho will host La Serna at 5:15 p.m. on Friday, while Whittier will head out to face them at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
