Preview: Roosevelt Rough Riders vs. Sunnyside Wildcats
Roosevelt has enjoyed the comforts of home their last two games, but now they'll head out on the road. They will square off against the Sunnyside Wildcats at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Roosevelt is not getting complacent, as they presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Sunnyside in California (Roosevelt is ranked 292nd, while Sunnyside is ranked 773rd).
It may have taken overtime to finish the job, but Roosevelt ultimately got the result they hoped for on Wednesday. They came out on top against Torres by a score of 62-51.
Roosevelt relied on the efforts of Taylor Sutherland, who dropped a double-double on 22 points and 12 rebounds, and Nyleigh Gregory, who scored 32 points along with two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Gregory has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Lizsandra Torres, who scored no points along with 12 rebounds and five blocks.
Meanwhile, Sunnyside's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Wednesday after their fifth straight loss. They fell just short of Madera South by a score of 38-35. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss Sunnyside has suffered since December 28, 2023.
Roosevelt's win was their 16th straight at home, which pushed their record up to 13-7. They've been dominating during the games in that stretch too, as they've won by an average of 36.5 points. As for Sunnyside, they have traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost nine of their last ten contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-15 record this season.
Everything came up roses for Roosevelt against Sunnyside in their previous matchup back in December of 2023 as the squad secured a 62-34 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Roosevelt since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
