Baseball Game Preview: Waterville Panthers vs. Belfast Lions

Waterville and Belfast are an even 4-4 against one another since May of 2016, but likely not for long. The Panthers will welcome the Lions at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Waterville is coming into the contest on a five-game losing streak.

Waterville came into this matchup off a tough 14-run loss on Friday. This time they kept things ultra-competitive, but unfortunately the final result was the same. They fell just short of Oceanside by a score of 5-3 on Monday.

Derek Couture put in work no matter where he played. He pitched 6.2 innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off eight hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base.

In other batting news, Felix Chapa was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one triple. Another player making a difference was Harper Hubbard, who went 3-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Monday just wasn't the day for Belfast's offense. They lost 10-0 to Cony on Monday. The Lions have struggled against the Rams recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive lost matchup.

Belfast saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Iven Ingraham, who went 1-for-2 with one double.

Waterville's defeat dropped their record down to 4-8. As for Belfast, their loss dropped their record down to 7-5.

Waterville couldn't quite get it done against Belfast in their previous meeting back in May of 2025 as they fell 7-3. Can the Panthers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
