Softball Recap: Gunnison Starts off Right with Win over Montezuma-Cortez

Gunnison had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They blew past the Montezuma-Cortez Panthers 13-2 on Saturday. Surprisingly, this marked the Cowboys' seventh straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.

Reese Japuntich spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on one hit.

On the hitting side, Susan Espinoza was a standout: she went 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run. Another player making a difference was Mchayla Singer, who went 2-for-3 with three runs and one double.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Gunnison kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in ten consecutive contests dating back to last season.

Montezuma-Cortez's defeat was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 0-3.

Gunnison will have a chance to go back-to-back against the Panthers: the pair will be back at it again later today.
