Softball Recap: Putnam County Comes Up Short

Putnam County extended their losing streak to three on Monday, dropping them down to 6-11. They came up short against the Highland Cougars, falling 9-3. The Midgets were not able to make up for their loss to the Cougars from their previous meeting back in October of 2024.

Rory Gilworth spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and eight unearned) runs on five hits and racked up six Ks. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances.

As for Highland, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won nine of their last ten games. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-3 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.8 runs over those games.

On Highland's side, they also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Abby Lay gave up just two earned (and one unearned) runs on one hit and racked up 16 Ks. Those 16 strikeouts set a new season-high mark for Lay.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Hannah Ritterbusch, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high. Manda Jennings also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. Putnam County will take on Gilman City at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday. The Midgets' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Hawks have averaged an impressive 9.2 runs per game this season. As for Highland, they will challenge South Shelby at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
