Softball Game Preview: Gunnison Cowboys vs. Montrose Red Hawks

The Gunnison Cowboys will square off against the Montrose Red Hawks at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Gunnison has given up an average of 11.2 runs per game this season, but Wednesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Gunnison is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 12 runs last Saturday, they were much more limited against Alamosa last Tuesday. They came up short against the Mean Moose, falling 20-2. The Cowboys have struggled against the Mean Moose recently, as the game was their ninth consecutive lost matchup.

Gunnison saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Maddy Bacalis, who went 1-for-2 with one RBI.

Meanwhile, Montrose fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Fruita Monument on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They took a 5-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Wildcats. Having soared to a lofty 13 runs in the game before, the Red Hawks couldn't push the score so high this time.

Bentley Schiller spent all nine innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and one unearned) runs on seven hits and racked up 12 Ks. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in eight consecutive appearances.

Montrose's loss dropped their record down to 12-6. As for Gunnison, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-9.

Both the two teams just can't seem to miss. Gunnison has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.2 hits per game. However, it's not like Montrose struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 4.4 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
