Football Game Preview: South Cougars vs. Goddard Lions

The South Cougars will head out to face off against the Goddard Lions at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. South is looking for their season's first win.

On Friday, South was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 29-23 to Valley Center. Despite 77 more yards than the Hornets, the Cougars couldn't convert that extra yardage to scores.

Despite the loss, South saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Izrael Telles threw for 215 yards and two touchdowns while completing 72% of his passes.

Meanwhile, it was a proper cat-fight when Goddard challenged Andover Central on Friday. The Lions came out on top against the Jaguars by a score of 31-23. The Lions haven't had any issues with the Jaguars recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive victory against them.

South better keep an eye on Erik Olivas. He was instrumental in Goddard's win, rushing for 212 yards and a pair of TDs while picking up 10.6 yards per carry. Olivas really tore up the turf during one magnificent 94-yard run.

South's defeat dropped their record down to 0-5. As for Goddard, they now have a winning record of 3-2.

South was dealt a bruising 61-10 loss at the hands of Goddard when the teams last played back in October of 2024. Can the Cougars avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
