Softball Recap: Callaway Has No Trouble Against Columbus

It's playoff time, and Callaway had no trouble coming through when it counted. They put the hurt on the Columbus Blue Devils with a sharp 12-3 win on Wednesday. The Cavaliers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 11 contests by eight runs or more this season.

Mackenzie Toney made a big impact no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over seven innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run. That's the most hits she has posted since back in August.

In other batting news, Ella Kelly was incredible, going 4-for-5 with four runs, two stolen bases, and two RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in September. Another player making a difference was Keira Trone, who went 1-for-4 with three RBI, one triple, and one stolen base.

Callaway kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in three consecutive games.

Callaway has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 12-18 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Columbus, they moved to 13-16 with that defeat, which also ended their three-game winning streak.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Callaway beat the Blue Devils by a score of 6-5 later that day.
