Basketball Preview: Lassen Grizzlies vs. Shasta Wolves
The Lassen Grizzlies will square off against the Shasta Wolves at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.
Lassen will head into Saturday's game out to bounce back: they won a close one the last time they played, but unfortunately they suffered a serious change of fortune two weeks ago. They might have been a little too into the holiday spirit, gifting Redding Christian an easy 73-51 victory. One positive for the Grizzlies, at least, is that this was the most points they've scored all season.
Lassen's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Kinley Somerville, who posted ten points along with six boards and five assists, and Maddie Cheshire, who put up five points in addition to nine rebounds and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Mya Morales, who had eight points and three steals.
Even though they lost, Lassen smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in four consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, Shasta had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 21 points) and they went ahead and made it three on Thursday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Panthers 49-47.
Lassen has traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-6 record this season. As for Shasta, their victory bumped their record up to 9-1.
Lassen ended up a good deal behind Shasta in their previous meeting back in January of 2024, losing 51-32. Can Lassen avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
