Eagles recognized as state's top team in season condensed due to ongoing pandemic.

The high school football season in Minnesota came to an abrupt close after the Minnesota State High School League was forced to shutter sports competition for four weeks due to growing COVID-19 cases which prompted an emergency executive order from Gov. Tim Walz.

Teams were given the option to play a second round of playoffs if possible. Eden Prairie was among those who did, beating Prior Lake 21-7 to end on a positive note.

That victory, coupled with a 7-0 record and tremendous play this season, makes Eden Prairie the 2020 MaxPreps Champion for the state of Minnesota.

It was the fifth time since 2010 Eden Prairie closed out the season with the No. 1 ranking but the first time since 2017. Head coach Mike Grant's squad also finished No. 1 in 2011, 2013 and 2014. The Eagles have won 11 state titles on the field.

Eden Prairie outscored opponents 244-48 this fall with shutouts against Shakopee and Edina.

In all, there were 36 section champions crowned according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune
