Baseball Recap: Highland Comes Up Short

Highland extended their losing streak to four on Wednesday, dropping them down to 7-17. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 5-4 heartbreaker at the hands of Waterloo. Bulldogs fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team has lost against Waterloo since Wednesday.

Tyler Mehrtens made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. Kaden Leckrone was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.

As for Waterloo, their win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 13-5. The game was the first time they have beaten Highland on their field since May 18, 2024.

On Waterloo's side, Grant Nobbe looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Nobbe has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Carter Jones was excellent, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with one triple, one run, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Drake Luedeman, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Highland will take on Glenwood at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The Bulldogs' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Titans have averaged an impressive 7.4 runs per game this season. As for Waterloo, they will face off against DuQuoin at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Bulldogs 3.3, the Indians 3.6) so any runs scored will be well earned.
