Football Recap: O'connor Drops Season-High Score on Holmes

O'Connor won the last time they faced Holmes and things went their way on Thursday too. The Panthers were the clear victors by a 52-28 margin over the Huskies. The Panthers' offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.

O'Connor was led to victory by Jake Garza and Wyatt McKenzie. Garza threw for 116 yards and two touchdowns, while McKenzie rushed for 138 yards and one TD on only 15 carries. McKenzie is becoming a predictor of the Panthers' success: when he posts at least 100 rushing yards the team is 2-1 (and 1-4 when he doesn't). Connor Christian was in the mix as well, providing O'Connor with two scores.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: O'Connor was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 307 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since the start of last season.

Holmes' defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jayden Hopkins, who rushed for 163 yards and one TD on only 12 carries, and also threw for 65 yards and one touchdown. Hopkins' longest rush was for an impressive 62 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Deonta Corley was another key player, picking up 154 receiving yards and a pair of scores.

O'Connor's victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 3-5. As for Holmes, they dropped their record down to 1-8 with the loss, which was their ninth straight on the road dating back to last season.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. O'Connor is set to take on their familiar foe Stevens at 2:00 p.m. on November 1. Meanwhile, Holmes will face off against rival Marshall at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
